BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University Men's Golf team will be one of 18 elite collegiate golf programs to compete at the 2008 Isleworth UCF Collegiate Invitational. This tournament is played on one of the finest courses in the country and is scheduled for Oct. 26-28.
"When you get the opportunity to play there (Isleworth), you simply go there," said Head Coach Mike Mayer. "This is one of the top two tournaments of the year, no question."
Members of Isleworth include PGA greats such as Tiger Woods, Charles Howell III, Mark O'Meara, John Cook and Lee Janzen. In years past these touring professionals have been seen spectating as the best collegiate players from around the country take on the course they call home.
The level of competition is no different this year as 11 of the 18 teams competing advanced to last season's NCAA Championships, including each of the top-five finishers. Below is a complete list of the field:
Team (NCAA Finish): Alabama (13), Arizona, UCLA (1), UCF, Charlotte (T8), Clemson (5), Georgia (T8), Georgia Tech, Florida State, Illinois (T17), Indiana (21), Kentucky, Oklahoma State (4), USC (3), South Carolina, Stanford (2), Texas (19) and Texas Tech.
"There is a strong field that includes many of the best programs in collegiate golf," said Mayer. "It's a great way to end our fall season."
The Isleworth Collegiate Invitational is designed to give players and coaches the feel of a major for college golf. Isleworth is consistently ranked the longest and toughest course in the state by the Florida State Golf Association (FSGA), proving to challenge the NCAA's best players. From its back tees, dubbed the Tiger Tees, Isleworth measures 7,544 yards with a slope of 142 and a rating of 77.5. Originally designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay with a re-design by Steve Smyers in 2003, Isleworth's course demands precise drives and accurate short game shots.
