BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore defender Kelly Lawrence will represent her native England with the country's Under-23 team at this month's Nordic Cup. Cup action begins on Tuesday, July 15, and will run through Monday, July 21.
Lawrence, who earned first team All-Big Ten and All-Great Lakes Region honors in 2007, joins her countrywomen for the second consecutive summer in 2008. The Chigwell, Essex, native played for the Under-19 squad at the UEFA Cup, where the team finished as runner-up to champion Germany at the event.
England starts round-robin play with a match against Norway on July 15. England then plays the United States on July 17 and Switzerland on July 19. The finals will be played on Monday, July 21. Lawrence and Oregon State's Jodie Taylor are the only collegiate players on the U-23 squad.
Most recently, Lawrence played for the U-20 squad at the Four Nations Tournament in February. She is a candidate for a spot for the U-20 FIFA World Cup team, scheduled for November in Chile.
Following the 2007 season, Lawrence was selected All-Great Lakes Region by both the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and by Soccer Buzz. She also became the first Hoosier defender in school history to pick up first team All-Big Ten laurels. She is just the second defender to have garnered all-conference honors twice in her career, joining Azure Johnson (1995, 1996) in that category. Lawrence and Emily Hotz (2000, 2001) are the only two Hoosiers to have picked up conference recognition in their freshman and sophomore campaigns.
Lawrence has emerged as one of the top 1-v-1 defenders in the conference and also finished with one goal and one assist on the season. In 2006, she was also a unanimous selection to the Big Ten's All-Freshman Team. During the summer of 2007, Lawrence also helped the England U-19 team to a runner-up finish at the 2007 U-19 UEFA Cup in Reykjavik, Iceland.
