BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Jorge Campillo, a native of Spain, recently led Team Europe to a 14-10 victory in the Palmer Cup. The Palmer Cup is an annual eight-man team golf competition between American and European collegiate golfers.
Campillo, playing in his second consecutive Palmer Cup, began the event by pairing up with Southern California's Tim Sluiter (from the Netherlands) in a four-ball match versus the United States' Rickie Fowler (Oklahome State) and Billy Horschel (Florida). With birdies on Nos. 1, 5 and 6, Campillo and Sluiter built a four-hole margin after six holes. The European tandem capitalized on the early advantage in seizing the match, 4 and 2.
After suffering a 4 and 3 defeat to 2008 NCAA Champion Kevin Chappell of UCLA in singles play, it was back to four-ball action for Campillo in round three. He teamed up with Sluiter again, winning the second hole and never looking back in their 3 and 2 victory over Chappell and Fowler. They closed out the match on 16, winning with a birdie.
Campillo's final outing pitted him against Fowler once again, facing off in the first singles match of the final round. The two players raced around the course - completing 18 holes in two hours and 45 minutes - in a back-and-forth affair with each player winning five holes and halving the match.
