Bassett Earns Backstroke Gold at World Youth Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University sophomore Kurt Bassett came home with a gold in the 200 backstroke at the 2008 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Monterrey, Mexico.
Representing his native New Zealand, Bassett covered the 200 meters in a time of 1:59.67, becoming the first Hoosier to record a time under two minutes. Basset also swam the 100 back, placing fifth in a time of 56.26. His other events at the six-day meet included the 50-meter backstroke (18th- 27.11), 200-meter freestyle (22nd- 1:53.82) and the 400 medley relay (8th- 3:47.53).
It has been a busy summer for the Indiana swimmers on both the national and international level. More than 20 swimmers with IU ties competed at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials, while junior Kate Zubkova and IU graduate Sergiy Feseko are preparing to compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
