BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Indiana University Men's Golf team's final of four "majors" in the regular season will be the United States Collegiate Golf Championships in Atlanta, Ga. The tournament is a 15-team event with one of the most competitive playing fields in collegiate golf; and is scheduled from Apr. 5-7.
"This championship rivals Isleworth as the top collegiate golf tournament in the country," said Head Coach Mike Mayer. "Those two tournaments are without a doubt the top two. We are thrilled to be going to Atlanta and look to make the most of that opportunity."
The 4th annual USCC, recognized by players and coaches as "the Masters of college golf," will feature its most best field ever in 2009. Competing will be eight of the top nine teams and 11 of the top 14 on the final 2008 Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. Ten of the top 13 finishers at the 2008 NCAA Championships, including the entire top-five will be present. All 10 teams in the Golf World Magazine's projected top-10 for the upcoming season are in the playing field as well.
"It's another great situation to put our student-athletes in that will help prepare them for a run in the Big Ten Tournament, and our run for a NCAA Championship," said Mayer.
The 2009 field includes three ACC teams (Georgia Tech, Florida State, Clemson), four from the SEC (Georgia, Florida, Alabama, South Carolina), four Pac-10 teams (UCLA, USC, Stanford, Washington), two Big 12 teams (Oklahoma State, Texas A&M), East Tennessee State from the Atlantic Sun and the Hoosiers, the USCC's first Big Ten school.
The Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course is the annual site for the USCC. In 1999, Lakeside's par-5, 607-yard 11th hole was named as one of America's "Best 99 Golf Holes" by Golf Digest. Designed by Arthur Hills in 1990 and built around scenic Lake Windward, the Lakeside Course offers breathtaking views, firm and fast greens and championship conditions every day. Each player will be provided a caddie for competition.
"The field is great, the golf course is unbelievable," said Mayer. "The conditions will be as much like a PGA Major Championship as we will play. "
