BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches announced the 2008 Women's All-American Academic Awards on Tuesday and the Indiana water polo team had six players receive honors, led by rising sophomore Kelsey Campbell's recognition at the Outstanding level for those with a GPA of 3.71-4.0.
"I am very proud, not only of the six individuals who were recognized, but also of the team for posting the fifth-best team GPA in the country," King said. `It really is a testament to how hard the team worked in the classroom this past year, along with the help of Kelly Noonan and Brenda Blackburn in Academic Services."
In addition to Campbell, four Hoosiers were named in the Superior level for those with a GPA between 3.41-3.70. A pair of graduating seniors, Brittany Estrada and Jackie Pyrz, were among those named in the Superior level, in addition to rising junior Nicole Sands and rising sophomore Kate Dunn.
Rising Nicole Redder sophomore rounds out the six players recognized from Indiana, earning a spot in the Excellent level for a GPA between 3.20 and 3.40.
The entire Indiana team was also honored as a whole for accumulating a team GPA of 3.29 during the 2007-08 academic year, the fifth-best in the country among women's water polo teams. Harvard's 3.40 team GPA was tops in the country.
This marks the second consecutive season that six players have been recognized by the ACWPC and the fifth straight year that six or more players have been named.
With Campbell receiving the Outstanding level of recognition, the Hoosiers' run of consecutive seasons with at least one player in that level extends to five years. The streak started in 2004 when Kristin Zernicke, then a freshman, won the first of her four straight Outstanding awards.
