BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - IU golfer Jorge Campillo added another tournament victory to his already impressive resume, winning the Spanish National Amateur Championship with a 9-under-par 279.
"We are very happy for Jorge and very proud of all his outstanding accomplishments," said IU Head Coach Mike Mayer. "To win your national championship is a great achievement and a great honor; and it is well deserved.
Campillo blazed through the competition, topping the second-place finisher by five strokes. The 2008 NCAA runner-up shot under or even par in all four rounds (70-67-72-70), finishing as the only player to do so. His 67 in the second round was the second lowest score carded in the entire competition. In addition, Campillo was one of only two competitors to shoot under par for the tournament.
Campillo's international success is being noticed, evidenced by the latest World Amateur Rankings. He comes in at No. 2 in the world.
"Jorge continues to solidify his position as one of the top amateur golfers in the world," said Mayer.
Campillo, and the rest of the Hoosier men's golf team begin the 2008-09 season on Sept. 13 at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate in Zionsville, Ind. Stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com for Indiana's complete men's golf schedule as it will be officially released later in the week.
