BEIJING, China - Former Indiana standout Kayla Bashore had a goal and an assist in the United States' win over New Zealand on Friday. The win keeps the hopes of playing in the semifinal rounds alive for the Americans.
Bashore put a pass into the middle, early in the second half, that was deflected past New Zealand goalkeeper Beth Jurgeleit by Keli Smith, who scored twice in the game.
Bashore later scored the final goal of the game when she put a Kelly Doton pass into the net. The Shoemakersville, Pa. native took a pass from Doton out of a penalty corner in the 47th minute and squeezed it past Jurgeleit to increase the U.S. lead to three, which proved to be the margin of victory.
Bashore was an All-American at Indiana in 2003 and 2005 and Big Ten Player of the Year in 2005. She scored 23 career goals in 76 career games for the Hoosiers. The four-time All-Big Ten selection was also a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Team USA will square up against the team from Great Britain on Monday at 6 a.m. ET to close out play in Pool B.
