BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team saw its first action of the season on Thursday, hosting Ball State in a preseason scrimmage. The Hoosiers came out firing on all cylinders to put the Cardinals down by a score of 6-1.
Sophomore forward Katie Griswold got the action started with 9:43 left in the first of three 23-minute periods. She took a centering pass from junior Haley Funk and beat the Ball State keeper for the game's first score.
IU put up two more scores before the end of the first frame. Sophomore forward Lena Grote picked up a rebound out of a penalty corner and put it into the back of the net from right in front. The third goal came inside of one minute when sophomore Brenna Moeljadi scored on a penalty corner, with assists from junior Meg O'Connell and Griswold.
The second period saw the Hoosiers extend their lead. Moeljadi scored her second goal on another penalty corner, driving a hard shot low into the left side of the goal to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Hoosiers. With no time left in the period, freshman Jaclyn Zamudio received a pass from Moeljadi on a penalty corner and scored from point-blank range on the right side.
In the game's final period, Alina Valenti put home a rebound after countless attempts by the Hoosiers from right in front of the keeper.
Ball State broke up freshman Becky Pany's shutout with 3:15 left in the contest. The Cardinals were able to sneak one past on a penalty corner.
Indiana head coach Amy Robertson was pleased with her team in the first action of the season.
"We got some good swings in and learned a lot about ourselves. This was meant as a learning experience," Robertson said. "As the periods progressed, I thought we adjusted well, and we learned a lot of things that we need to focus on before we play Louisville on Sunday."
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Aug. 24, when they will scrimmage with the Louisville Cardinals at the IU Field Hockey Field starting at 1 p.m.
