THE OPENING WHISTLE
The Indiana field hockey team opens the 2008 season on the road against BIG EAST foe Rutgers. This is the first of eight games away from Bloomington to start the season for the Hoosiers, who travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on Saint Joseph’s of the Atlantic 10 on Sunday Aug. 31. This will be the second matchup between the Hoosiers and the Scarlet Knights. The first meeting, in 2002, saw the Hoosiers fall by a score of 0-1. The Hoosiers are 2-5 all-time against teams from the BIG EAST. This will be the first time the Hoosiers square off with the Hawks. Indiana holds a 5-5 record all-time against the Atlantic 10 conference.
BASHORE REPRESENTS HOOSIERS, USA IN BEIJING
Former Hoosier standout Kayla Bashore helped the United States to an impressive eighth place finish at the Beijing Olympic Games. Bashore scored a goal and recorded an assist in the games.
Bashore, a native of Shoemakersville, Pa., played for the Hoosiers from 2001-03 and then redshirted in 2004 before returning in 2005 for her senior season. In her five years, Bashore received All-America status twice and currently sits in second place on the career goals scored list with 23. In her senior season, she was named Big Ten Player of the Year after scoring 12 goals and recording 29 points, both the second-best single-season totals in IU field hockey history.
MOELJADI MAKES U.S. JUNIOR SQUAD
Sophomore Brenna Moeljadi was one of the names announced by USA Field Hockey when the governing body released its roster for the 2008-09 Junior National squad.
The Culver City, Calif. native was named a member of the 2008-09 Junior Squad as well as an alternate on the 2008 Junior Pan-Am team. Moeljadi had six points on one goal and four assists during her freshman season in 2007, appearing in 10 games with seven starts.
Athletic trainer Andrea Roth was also selected to attend the Pan-Am games, and she will be helping the USA Field Hockey team at the games. Roth is in her third year at Indiana, and she worked on the medical staff at the Atlanta and Athens Olympiads.
HOOSIERS HUNT FOR CARDINALS IN EXHIBITION GAMES
The Indiana field hockey team hosted two exhibition games to warm up for the start of the season. The contests saw two sets of Cardinals come to town.
On Thursday, Aug. 21, the Cardinals from Ball State came to Bloomington. The Hoosiers came out firing on all cylinders to put the Cardinals down by a score of 6-1.
Sophomore forward Katie Griswold got the action started with 9:43 left in the first of three 23-minute periods. She took a centering pass from junior Haley Funk and beat the Ball State keeper for the game’s first score.
IU put up two more scores before the end of the first frame. Sophomore forward Lena Grote picked up a rebound out of a penalty corner and put it into the back of the net from right in front. The third goal came inside of one minute when sophomore Brenna Moeljadi scored on a penalty corner, with assists from junior Meg O’Connell and Griswold.
The second period saw the Hoosiers extend their lead. Moeljadi scored her second goal on another penalty corner, driving a hard shot low into the left side of the goal to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Hoosiers. With no time left in the period, freshman Jaclyn Zamudio received a pass from Moeljadi on a penalty corner and scored from pointblank range on the right side.
In the game’s final period, Alina Valenti put home a rebound after countless attempts by the Hoosiers from right in front of the keeper.
Ball State broke up freshman Becky Pany’s shutout with 3:15 left in the contest, as the Cardinals were able to sneak one past on a penalty corner.
Louisville came to town for the final preseason scrimmage on Sunday, Aug. 24. The Cardinals outlasted the Hoosiers to win by a score of 4-1 on the hot and humid August afternoon.
The Hoosiers’ lone goal was scored in the 48th minute, when senior Dani Castro fired a pass to the right post where sophomore Kelsey Kiper was to deflect the pass past the Louisville keeper.
Indiana saw good play from freshman goalkeeper Becky Pany against Louisville, as she recorded four saves in more than 50 minutes of action.
