BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University junior defender Kevin Alston is the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. It is the second career defensive Big Ten Player of the Week honor for Alston.
Alston sparked the Hoosiers to a 1-0-1 start to the 2008 season with a 2-1 win over Duke and a 0-0 double overtime tie against No. 12 Akron at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. Against the Blue Devils, Alston put the Hoosiers on the board first with a goal in the 59th minute, the third score of his career. He finished the match with a pair of shots as IU won its first home opener since the 2005 season.
Against Akron Alston led a defense that recorded its first shutout of the season, keeping the Zips off the board over 110 minutes of play. Alston also continued his offensive efforts with two shots, one of which was on goal. He was honored with a spot on the all-tournament team and was named defensive MVP.
The Hoosiers are back in action this weekend at the seventh annual Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament at Notre Dame. Indiana will face No. 5 South Florida on Friday at 5 p.m. before taking on Dartmouth Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
