BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University senior goalkeeper Chay Cain and freshman forward Will Bruin were honored this week for their play as the Hoosiers came home from their West Coast road swing with a 3-0 victory over No. 24 UCLA, and a 2-1 win over San Diego.
Cain was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the third time in his career after recording his third shutout over a ranked opponent this season with the win over No. 24 UCLA on Friday night. Cain had one save in the match and increased his career shutout total to 23, which is tied for seventh on the all-time list. Against San Diego on Sunday, Cain tallied two saves as the Hoosiers improved to 3-1-2 overall.
Bruin scored his first career goal in Friday's win over UCLA and added another score against San Diego, earning him recognition on the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer Teams of the Week. Against the Bruins, Bruin alertly collected a rebound off a shot off the post, putting home his first career goal. Against the Torreros, it was Bruin's score that gave IU a 1-0 lead, this time picking up a rebounded corner kick and slicing it through the defense for the score.
Indiana moved up two spots to No. 13 in the latest Soccer America poll and rose five spots to No. 12 in the College Soccer News rankings. The Hoosiers return to the pitch at Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 21 as they open Big Ten play against the Wisconsin Badgers. The 3 p.m. match will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and is preceded by the IU women taking on Loyola Chicago at noon.
