BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team dropped a match to the Cincinnati Bearcats Saturday, marking only the second Hoosier defeat in their last ten matches. Cincinnati pulled off the victory by scores of 25-21, 25-21, 25-19.
Erica Short continued her stellar play in the losing effort, hitting a match-high 18 kills while hitting .353 on the day. Caitlin Cox posted good numbers as well, including nine digs and two service aces.
For the tournament, Short and Ashley Benson were IU's top performers. They each earned all-tournament team honors for the third consecutive weekend. Short totaled 51 kills, 14 digs, eight blocks and a .288 hitting percentage while Benson also hit .288 with 30 kills, four digs and 11 blocks on the weekend.
Indiana was red-hot to begin the match, scoring the first seven points. The Bearcats responded, however, by taking 11 of the next 14 points for an 11-10 advantage. From there, the score see-sawed back and forth with three lead changes. The last lead change came off a UC ace at the 20-19 mark. Cincinnati maintained their lead the rest of the way in a 25-21 win.
Set number two was very tight as well, evidenced by the score being tied on nine different occasions in the set, including a 20-20 deadlock. Short put-away seven kills on nine swings with no errors, but it was not enough as the Bearcats scrapped out another 25-21 victory.
The Hoosiers found themselves in a deficit at the mid-way point of the third set, trailing 15-9. Indiana then began to crawl back into the contest, pulling within in two points at 19-21 after Danielle LaGrange connected on a kill. Cincinnati was able to put together another late-set run though, earning a 25-19 win.
The Cream and Crimson start conference action next weekend when Big Ten foes Illinois (Friday) and Purdue (Saturday) visit University Gym. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.
