BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Athletics, along with several groups and members of the Bloomington community helped out with the Karst Playscape Construction at Karst Farm in Bloomington.
Several student-athletes and staff members spent time on Sept. 13-14, assisting in the construction.
"I am extremely proud of our student-athletes and their participation at the build," said IU Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services Mattie White. "This service project not only allowed them to make an impact on the Bloomington community, but it also provided an opportunity for them to build relationships with each other."
The Karst Playscape is being designed for children of all abilities. It will include a playground for 5-12 year olds and 2-5 year olds, and will be a fully accessible play area with soft, rubberized surfacing and ramped access routes. The playscape will also have a water splash pad component and water wheelchairs will also be provided.
The Karst Playscape is part of a larger effort at improving accessible recreation in Monroe County. The partnership is also building an endowment at the community foundation. The first phase of the playscape and endowment has been supported by a matching grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. The partnership is now looking for funding to complete the playscape and grow the endowment. For more information about the park, visit www.weallplay.org.
