BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Scoring the game-winning goal in overtime for a 3-2 victory over Wisconsin has netted Indiana University junior Eric Alexander the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award, the league office announced Monday.
Alexander's game winner came with 3:07 elapsed in the first overtime period. The play began with a ball in the back from Lee Hagedorn to Neil Wilmarth, who was making a run up the right side. Wilmarth spotted Alexander on the back post and sent the ball in, giving Alexander the opportunity to punch home the score from eight yards out.
Earlier in the match, Alexander assisted on a score from Wilmarth that gave the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead. This is the second career weekly honor for Alexander and the third time this season an IU player has been honored by the Big Ten (Kevin Alston- Sept. 1; Chay Cain- Sept. 15).
Alexander was also honored by Top Drawer Soccer and Soccer America by being named to their Teams of the Week.
The Hoosiers take a break from conference play this weekend as they play host to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday night. The Gauchos won the NCAA title in 2006, and Indiana defeated UCSB in penalty kicks to win its seventh national championship in 2004. Match time is 7:30 p.m. at Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
