SETTING THE SCENE
• After opening Big Ten play with a 3-2 overtime win over Wisconsin last Sunday, the Hoosiers take a break from conference action to play host to UC Santa Barbara.
• Indiana is 3-1-2 in nonconference games this season with six non-league matches, including UCSB, left on the slate.
• The Hoosiers are 2-0-1 at home this season. They won't have much time to enjoy the friendly confines of Armstrong Stadium as three of their next four matches are on the road.
• After a three-match scoring drought, Indiana has scored eight goals in its last three outings.
• This is just the fourth meeting between IU and UCSB, with the teams splitting their meetings in 2004.
• UCSB was a 1-0 winner in double overtime during the regular season, while Indiana was the winner, 3-2 in penalty kicks in the NCAA title game.
NEWS AND NOTES
• With a 3-2 overtime win over Wisconsin on Sept. 21, Indiana is now 15-0-3 in Big Ten openers.
• The win also made the Hoosiers 78-7-9 all-time in Big Ten matches.
• Brian Ackley gave Indiana a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season, and Neil Wilmarth also scored for the first time this year to put the Hoosiers on top 2-1.
• It was Eric Alexander who scored the game-winning goal in the 94th minute, with Wilmarth and Neil Hagedorn assisting on the score.
• Alexander also had an assist in the match and leads the team in scoring with six points (2g, 2a).
• The two goals is the most given up to a Big Ten team since a 3-2 overtime win at Michigan on Sept. 29, 2007.
• Indiana is 1-0-2 in overtime matches this season.
• The Hoosiers are 2-0-3 in their last five Big Ten overtime matches.
• Three of Indiana's last four regular-season Big Ten matches have stretched into overtime.
• Indiana is 1-0-2 against top-25 teams this season.
• The Hoosiers also have a pair of double overtime scoreless ties against Akron and South Florida, along with a 3-0 win over UCLA.
• Goalkeeper Chay Cain recorded his third shutout of the season and the 23rd of his career in the win over UCLA on Sept. 12.
• Will Bruin scored his first career goal against the Bruins and added his second score of the weekend in the 2-1 win over San Diego.
• Indiana is 1-1 on penalty kick attempts this season.
• Indiana finished as runner up at its adidas/IU Credit Union Classic with a 2-1 win over Duke on Aug. 29 and a 0-0 double overtime tie with No. 12 Akron on Aug. 31.
• 3,239 fans were on hand for the IU-Akron match, which currently ranks 10th in the country this season.
• 3,464 fans were on hand for the 2-1 win over Duke, which ranks eighth.
• Indiana was victorious in its home opener for the first time since 2005.
• Indiana is now 21-10-5 in season openers.
• The Hoosiers finished the preseason with a 2-0 record after a 3-1 victory over Tulsa on Aug. 20 and a 3-0 shutout of North Carolina on Aug. 22,
• With a 3-2 overtime win over Wisconsin on Sept. 21, Indiana has never lost a match televised on the Big Ten Network, going 4-0-4 in those games.
SCOUTING THE GAUCHOS
• UC Santa Barbara is 4-3 on the season and is coming off a 6-2 loss to No. 1 Wake Forest at home.
• The Gauchos have lost three of their last four, with the lone win a 4-2 victory over Evansville at home.
• UCSB is 1-2 on the road this year.
• Chris Pontius leads the Gauchos' attack with six goals and one assist (13 points).
• Only one other player has more than one goal, with Martin Hedevag tallying two scores.
• Pontius has taken 42 shots, double what the next-closest Gaucho has taken (Bryan Dominguez).
• Trond Helge Takset has played all seven matches in goal this season, with six starts.
• Takset has allowed 14 goals for a 2.15 GAA and posted one shutout on the season, a 1-0 win over Kentucky.
• Head coach Tim Vom Steeg is in his 10th season at UCSB and enters the match with a career record of 134-52-15 with the Gauchos.
• He is assisted by Greg Wilson, Neil Jones and Stuart Dobson.
SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana leads the series, 2-1.
• The teams last met in the 2004 NCAA Championship game. That match ended in a 1-1 tie in regulation. The Hoosiers went on to win their seventh national title with a 3-2 PK victory.
• The teams had met in the regular season earlier that year with UCSB posting a 1-0 win in overtime.
• The first meeting came in 2002, a 3-1 Indiana victory.
ALEXANDER IS BIG TEN OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• Scoring the game-winning goal in overtime for a 3-2 victory over Wisconsin has netted Indiana University junior Eric Alexander the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week award, the league office announced Sept. 22.
• Alexander's game winner came with 3:07 elapsed in the first overtime period. The play began with a ball in the back from Lee Hagedorn to Neil Wilmarth, who was making a run up the right side. Wilmarth spotted Alexander on the back post and sent the ball in, giving Alexander the opportunity to punch home the score from eight yards out.
• Earlier in the match, Alexander assisted on a score from Wilmarth that gave the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead. This is the second career weekly honor for Alexander and the third time this season an IU player has been honored by the Big Ten (Kevin Alston- Sept. 1; Chay Cain- Sept. 15).
• Alexander was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week on Sept. 22.
• On Sept. 23, it was announced that Alexander earned a spot on the Soccer America Team of the Week.
E.A. GETS IN THE GAME
• Junior midfielder Eric Alexander proved to be the difference in Indiana's 3-2 OT win over Wisconsin.
• It marked the second goal in three matches for Alexander after he scored in a 3-0 win at UCLA on Sept. 12.
• Prior to the UCLA match, Alexander had not found the back of the net since a 4-0 win at Kentucky on Oct. 31, 2007.
• Alexander is coming off his best season for the Hoosiers, scoring five goals and adding an assist in 2007 to earn unanimous All-Big Ten honors.
DEJA VÚ
• Indiana was re-living the past on Sunday in a 3-2 overtime win over Wisconsin to open the 2008 Big Ten season.
• In 2007, the Hoosiers also opened conference play with a 3-2 overtime win, that time against the Michigan Wolverines.
• Against the Badgers, Eric Alexander put home the game-winning score at 93:07, keeping IU undefeated in Big Ten openers.
• Last season against Michigan, Kevin Noschang was responsible for the game winner, scoring at 95:47.
• Both games followed the same pattern with Indiana leading 1-0, then 2-1.

RANKING THE HOOSIERS
• Indiana ranks among the top 25 in all four polls.
• NSCAA/adidas kept Indiana in the No. 14. spot.
• Soccer America bumped the Hoosiers from No. 13 to No. 10.
• Soccer Times moved Indiana up one spot to No. 12.
• Indiana remained at No. 12 in the College Soccer News poll.
• The Hoosiers are ahead of both Northwestern (No. 12) and Ohio State (No. 17) in Soccer America's top 25.
• Indiana trails Northwestern (No. 10) but is ranked ahead of Ohio State (No. 20) according to College Soccer News.
• The NSCAA/adidas poll has Northwestern ahead of Indiana at No. 7, and Ohio State behind the Hoosiers at No. 16.
• Indiana is ranked behind Northwestern (No. 10) and ahead of Ohio State (No. 14) in the Soccer Times poll.
BIG TEN DOMINATION
• Since the Big Ten began sponsoring men's soccer in 1991, the Hoosier have dominated the league.
• The Hoosiers are 78-7-9 in regular season matches, tallying nearly 30 more victories than second-place team Penn State (50).
• Indiana has never lost in its Big Ten opener, going 15-0-3 in those matches.
• IU has won 11 Big Ten tournament titles, sharing the 1995 crown with Wisconsin.
• Indiana has also been crowned regular season champion 13 times, including nine-straight seasons from 1996-2004. IU has now won back-to-back regular season titles in 2006 and 2007.
• Indiana has been the league's goals-against average leader in 15 of 17 seasons, including 2007 when the Hoosiers allowed just two goals in six matches for a 0.31 GAA.
• IU had a league-record 10 Big Ten Players of the Year, including two of the last three seasons.
• The Hoosiers have also boasted the Freshman of the Year two of the last three years.
ANOTHER CLEAN SHEET
• Senior goalkeeper Chay Cain recorded his 23rd career solo shutout on
Sept. 12 when the Hoosiers posted a 3-0 victory at UCLA.
• It was his third shutout of the season (Akron, South Florida).
• Cain recorded 10 shutouts in 2006 and added another 10 in 2007.
• Cain ranks seventh on IU's career shutout list, 10th in saves (157) and ninth in career wins (29).
SCORING DEPTH
• When it comes to scoring threats Indiana's opponents can't just focus on one or two players as the Hoosiers' 10 goals have come from eight different players.
• Only freshman Will Bruin and junior Eric Alexander have multiple goals with two each.
•Indiana also showed its depth during the preseason as the six goals were scored by six different players.
• Andy Adlard, John Mellencamp and Michael Roach came with the scores against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes in a 3-1 win.
• In the 3-0 win over North Carolina, it was Neil Wilmarth, Brian Ackley and Kevin Noschang putting the ball in the net.
OFF THE ROAD
•Indiana closes out a two-game homestand against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday before heading back out on the road.
• After today the Hoosiers will play three of their next four on the road (Sept. 30 at Evansville; Oct. 7 at Butler; Oct. 12 at Michigan State).
• The only home match during that span is a meeting with Michigan on Oct. 4.
• That run is followed by three of four at home against Notre Dame (Oct. 16), Louisville (Oct. 22) and Kentucky (Oct. 29).
TIME CHANGE
•Indiana's match against Northwestern on Friday, Nov. 7 has been moved to a 6:30 p.m. ET start time to accommodate the Big Ten Network live broadcast. That is a half hour later than the previous time of 6 p.m. ET.
