Indiana heads to the Show Me State this weekend to take on two of the state's field hockey programs at the Anheuser-Busch Center in St. Louis. On Saturday, Sept. 6, the Hoosiers will square off with the Bears of Missouri State, who come off an opening weekend that saw them match their win total of 2007 by going 2-0. Indiana is 4-1 all-time against the Bears, winning the last four matchups, including a 2007 rout that had an 8-0 final tally. On Sunday, Sept. 7, IU will play the Saint Louis Billikens. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series 4-2, winning the last four games, including the 2007 matchup that saw Indiana win by a score of 8-0. Both of the weekend contests are slated for 1 p.m. ET starts.
HOOSIERS TAKE DOWN HAWKS
The Indiana field hockey team recorded its first victory of the 2008 season, winning by a 3-1 score over the Saint Joseph's Hawks on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon at Drexel University's Buckley Field. Juniors Haley Funk and Meg O'Connell and sophomore Katie Griswold all recorded their first goals on the season in the game.
Saint Joseph's got on the board first, when Kellie Walter sent in the initial pass on a penalty corner and received the ball right back from Anne Schreuders for the shot. The Hoosiers did not allow the 1-0 deficit to follow them to the second half. Indiana sophomore Brenna Moeljadi had her initial shot blocked, but Funk scooped up the loose ball and put it into the cage for the equalizer.
The Hoosiers went ahead for good on a goal by O'Connell. With 18:30 remaining, the St. Louis native found a loose ball during a scrum in front of the cage and tucked it away to put Indiana ahead, 2-1. Griswold added an insurance tally for the Hoosiers with 4:59 remaining in the game.
Sophomore keeper Alex Mann tallied four saves for IU in the win. The Hoosiers put 11 shots on goal in the game, with Kelly Swanick making eight saves and allowing the three goals.
IU FALLS IN OVERTIME
The Hoosiers got off to good start in the season opener at Rutgers on Friday, earning a 2-0 lead, but in the end, the Scarlet Knights came back to take the game in overtime. Amy Lewis of Rutgers had an assist and two goals in the second half to pull out the win.
Indiana came out firing, as junior forward Alina Valenti put in a rebound on a missed shot off of penalty corner in the 15th minute. Valenti's goal was the team's first on the season and put her ahead of her total last season.
In the 25th minute, junior forward Haley Funk sent a breakaway pass toward freshman Jaclyn Zamudio who dove forward to tap in her first career goal. The goal, which put the Hoosiers up by two, proved to be the final score for IU.
Coming out in the second half, the Hoosiers saw a similar number of opportunities to the first half but were unable to capitalize.
Lewis took over the second half, assisting on a Karen Brewster goal and then putting home the tying goal in the game's 52nd minute and the winning goal in overtime. The win moved Rutgers to 1-0 on the season and 2-0 in the all-time series with IU.
BASHORE REPRESENTS HOOSIERS, USA IN BEIJING
Former Hoosier standout Kayla Bashore helped the United States to an impressive eighth place finish at the Beijing Olympic Games. Bashore scored a goal and recorded an assist in the Games.
Bashore, a native of Shoemakersville, Pa., played for the Hoosiers from 2001-03 and then redshirted in 2004 before returning in 2005 for her senior season. In her five years, Bashore received All-America status twice and currently sits in second place on the career goals scored list with 23. In her senior season, she was named Big Ten Player of the Year after scoring 12 goals and recording 29 points, both the second-best single-season totals in IU field hockey history.
MOELJADI MAKES U.S. JUNIOR SQUAD Sophomore Brenna Moeljadi was one of the names announced by USA Field Hockey when the governing body released its roster for the 2008-09 Junior National squad.
The Culver City, Calif. native was named a member of the 2008-09 Junior Squad as well as an alternate on the 2008 Junior Pan-Am team. Moeljadi had six points on one goal and four assists during her freshman season in 2007, appearing in 10 games with seven starts.
