BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 2009 preseason poll was released by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) on Wednesday and the Indiana Hoosiers were just outside the top 20 as they were receiving votes in the national poll and start the year ranked fifth in the CWPA. The University of Southern California is ranked No. 1 in the national poll while Western Division rival Michigan holds down the top spot in the CWPA poll.
Indiana will be challenged throughout their 2009 schedule. The Hoosiers are slated to take on 11 schools in the Varsity Top 20 during the regular season, including each of the top 8 ranked teams.
The CWPA is expected to be highly competitive this season, and this is evident in the preseason poll. Two points separate Indiana from fourth ranked University of Maryland and sixth ranked Brown University. The top three teams in the CWPA stay unchanged from 2008, with the University of Michigan, Hartwick College, and Princeton University occupying the top three spots.
Indiana will start the 2009 season on Jan. 24 at the Michigan Kickoff against third ranked UCLA.
