ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In its second game of the day against a top 5 team in the country, the Indiana water polo team lost to the fifth-ranked University of California, 12-3 at the Michigan Kick-Off on Saturday.
The Bears outscored the Hoosiers 4-0 in the first period and never looked back. California took advantage of their three first half 6 on 5 chances by scoring two goals. Indiana tried to close the gap before the half with a goal by sophomore Amy Moore off of a nifty assist from freshman Jackie Köhli, but the Hoosiers still trailed 6-1 at the break.
The Hoosiers played competitively in the third quarter despite a penalty shot score by Cal fifteen seconds into the period. Indiana scored two of their goals in the quarter, with one coming from a 6 on 5 opportunity.
"I thought they were more physical than us in the first half, and we did a better job of trying to match them later in the game," said Indiana head coach Barry King.
Leading the way for the Hoosiers was Moore with two goals, both coming from Köhli assists. Junior Nicole Sands also got on the scoreboard with a goal in the third quarter. Sophomore Nicole Redder was strong on the defensive end with two steals, each coming in the first half.
In goal, the Hoosiers received a strong effort from freshman Cassie Wyckoff in her second career game. Wyckoff recorded nine saves in 27 minutes of play. Junior Katie Carson entered the game in the fourth period and notched one save.
The Hoosiers will return to action at the Michigan Kick-Off on Sunday at 9:05 a.m. against Cal State Northridge.
