BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Redshirt freshman Morgan Fleetwood and senior Haley Funk each netted a goal as the Indiana field hockey team knocked off No. 16 Northwestern, 2-1, at the IU Field Hockey Field in Bloomington. The Hoosiers are now 9-5 overall and 2-2 in Big Ten.
The Hoosiers scored late in the first half as Fleetwood put in a shot on the left side of the cage off a pass from the right wing of the circle from senior Meg O'Connell at the 28:46 mark. A few minutes later, the Wildcats (12-5, 1-3) knotted the score as Zoe Almquist put in an unassisted goal. Northwestern nearly scored again at the 34:24 mark, as Chelsea Armstrong took a shot off a corner, but junior Alex Mann saved it and sent the two teams into the break with a 1-1 score.
IU and Northwestern traded shots early in the second half, but at the 51:18 mark Funk netted what would be the game-winning goal as she scored off a rebound from a shot taken by junior Katie Griswold to give the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead.
Griswold, O'Connell and Fleetwood each had two shots on the game. Mann started in goal for IU and tallied four saves in 70:00. The Hoosiers outshot the Wildcats, 8-7.
The Hoosiers' win will be broadcast on tape delay Sunday, Oct. 18, at Noon ET on the Big Ten Network.
Indiana returns to action on Friday, Oct. 23 when it hosts Penn State at 3 p.m. ET. The Hoosiers conclude the home slate on Sunday, Oct. 25 against Pacific at Noon.
