BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Department of Athletics held a Hoosier Athlete social on Monday, Oct. 26, in the Henke Hall of Champions as a thank you to Indiana faculty and staff, and a way to bring IU student-athletes together with the IU community.
"Hoosier Athlete is a great event because it brings together the Department of Athletics and the IU community," said Emily Kasavana, president of IU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and member of the IU rowing team. "It also works to thank the IU faculty for their support and the important role they play in the Hoosier student-athlete experience."
"We as members of SAAC believe it is important to reach out to the university community as well as communicate the importance of academics for student-athletes," Kasavana added. "We also hope that by providing insight into our lives as athletes the relationship between faculty and the athletic department will remain strong for years to come."
"Monday night was a lot of fun," Matt Schmitz, a member of the IU men's track and field team. "Hoosier Athlete not only provided us with a chance to get to know our professors better, but it also enabled them to get a glimpse into the daily life of a student-athlete and to see what we do outside of the classroom."
"I enjoyed mingling with the great turn-out of faculty," said Rebekah Niedner from the IU rowing team. "I met some interesting new people, and I was happy that they all seemed very interested in the student-athlete experience. Likewise, we student-athletes are grateful for their commitment to excellence in the classroom. They definitely deserve their own cheering section, so I was glad we had the chance to give them applause for a change! The Hoosier Athlete event was a great opportunity to continue the blending of academic achievement and athletic performance here at IU. At the end of the day, we all just love IU and want to be proud Hoosiers!"
