EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshmen Josh MacTaggart and Alex van Gils and junior Santiago Gruter are still alive at the Big Ten Singles Championships, each winning two matches to advance to the round of 16. Gruter and MacTaggart are both looking for their second tournament win of the year, and each player is seeded in the conference tourney. Each will return to action on Sunday.
Gruter pulled his way through two very close sets before getting into a groove on the day. Agaisnt Sidarth Balaji of Northwestern, Gruter dropped the first set in the tiebreaker and won the second set in a tiebreaker. Something clicked in the second tiebreaker, as Gruter didn't drop a point. In the third and decisive set, Gruter won 6-0. He then went on to win his second-round matchup 6-0, 6-0 over Clark Richardson of Michigan State.
MacTaggart won 6-1, 6-0 in his opening-round matchup with Purdue's Jan-Frans Englebrecht. He then took down Phillip Arndt of Minnesota 6-3, 6-2. It took three sets for van Gils to win his first-round bout with Andrew McCarthy of Northwestern (6-3, 2-6, 6-5). He then took down Austen Kauss of Iowa 6-2, 6-2.
The three Hoosiers return to action on Sunday in East Lansing. For complete coverage of all things IU tennis, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
