Darkness Cuts Second Round Short at Johnie Imes Invitational

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Indiana University women's golf team was thwarted by darkness on day one of the Johnie Imes Invitational at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo. Three of IU's five golfers will finish the final two holes of the second round tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m. CT. The third and final round is scheduled to get underway at 9:30 a.m. CT.
As the teams headed into the clubhouse, Indiana sits tied for third place with a 310 in round one and is currently +12 in round with holes remaining for Laura Nochta, Kellye Belcher and Cecilia Orevik. Tulsa sits in the lead at +30, followed by Wisconsin (+32), Indiana (+34), Arkansas-Little Rock (+34), Missouri (+35) and Illinois State (+35) rounding out the top five.
Nochta is currently tied for 11th after a 75 in round one and is +4 with one hole to go in round two. Nochta opened round two with a birdie on three but posted a five on the par-4 fourth hole to move back to even. She added another stroke on nine and took a double bogey on 10 to move to +3. A bogey on 13 was followed by pars on the next five holes
Nochta double bogeyed her second hole of round one by came back with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole to move to +1 after seven were in the books. She was tripped up by bogeys on 12 and 14. She would close out the round with six-straight pars for a 3-over 75.
Orevik is tied for 15th after posting an 82 in round one and sits at -2 with two holes to play in round two. Orevik double bogeyed the par-5 sixth hole and added another bogey on eight, but she cut two strokes off her tally with back-to-back birdies on nine and 10. After four straight pars she birdied the 15th hole to move to even par with seven holes remaining. She birdied holes 17 and one to move to -2.
Orevik was 2-over after three holes in round one and moved to +4 after a double bogey on 11. She followed with pars on three of the next four holes but shot a five on the par-4 14th hole, then posted a five on the par-3 16th hole. She pared the next four holes before a bogey on three and finished with a 10-over 82 after a bogey on four.
Pamela Burneski is tied for 23rd with identical scores of 77 in rounds one and two. Burneski opened the second round with five pars but hit a stumbling block with bogeys on each of the next five holes. After a par on 15 she added another bogey on 16 but finished the back nine with pars on 17 and 18. She pared holes one, two and four and added a birdie on the par-4 third hole for a 5-over 77. Burneski got the day started right with a birdie on her opening hole but followed up with a double bogey on the very next green. Back-to-back bogeys on 10 and 11 put her at +3 for the round, and she added another three strokes to her total with a double bogey on 13 and a single on 16. Burneski fired off three pars before her second birdie of the round on hole one put her at +5. She finished with three more pars for a 5-over 77.
Kate Coons is tied for 28th with rounds of 79 and 77. After a bogey to open the round on the par-4 fourth hole, Coons caught fire with her second eagle of the year on five, and added a birdie on nine to move to -2 after six holes. The back nine proved to be a bit more of a challenge as bogeys on 11, 12 and 14 put her at +1. She closed out the back nine with bogeys on 16, 17 and 18 to jump to +4. Over the final three holes she came up with a pair of pars and one bogey.
Coons' opening round began with a pair of pars before a double bogey on six and a single on seven. She posted a birdie on eight to go to +2 before another bogey on 11. After three straight pars, she was tripped up with a double bogey on 15 and a single bogey on 16 to drop to +6. She recorded pars on the next four holes before finishing the round with a bogey on three for a 7-over 79.
Belcher is currently tied for 28th with a 79 in round one and sits at +5 with two holes to play in round two. Belcher was even through three holes before a bogey on seven and a double on eight dropped her to +3. She carded back-to-back bogeys on 13 and 14 but pared 15 through 18 to enter the final three holes of the round at +5.
Belcher opened with back-to-back bogeys on four and five in round one, but went 1- over the next seven holes with a birdie on the par-3 seventh hole. Sitting at +1, she bogeyed holes 13 and 14, followed by a double bogey on 15. She pared the next four holes before a double bogey on two. She closed the round with a par on three to finish at +7 (79).
