BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff was named an alternate for the 2009 Speedo Top 40 competition, U.S. National Team head coach Adam Krikorian announced this week. The three day event will be held on Oct. 23-25 in Los Alamitos, Calif.
Wyckoff is one of four alternates among the 16 players selected at the conclusion of open tryouts held at the USA Water Polo National Training Center in Los Alamitos, Calif., Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, Calif., the University of Michigan, and Harvard University. The tryouts were highly competitive and included the largest turnout in the history of the event, with over 110 athletes taking part.
The Speedo Top 40 competition consists of a round-robin style tournament where the Top 40 is broken up into four teams. Players will be vying for selections to the Senior "A", Senior "B", Junior and Youth teams, while being evaluated by members of the USA National staff.
Wyckoff started 22 games in goal for the Hoosiers during her freshman campaign. She finished the year with 195 saves, while defending 484 opposing shots. She also captured two CWPA Western Division Rookie of the Week honors during her first collegiate season.
