COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Indiana women's golf team closed out play with a 315 on Monday to finish seventh at the Johnie Imes Invitational at The Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Mo.
Indiana tallied a 928 (310-303-315), 19 strokes behind winner Wisconsin (909). Tulsa took second (912), with host Missouri third (913), Mississippi fourth (916) and Illinois State fifth (918).
"We gave ourselves some opportunities to score but just didn't convert," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We made some compound errors and on a course like this you can't do that. I don't think the team is pleased with how they performed, but we will get back on the course, practice and get ready for our trip to Texas in November."
Senior Laura Nochta placed tied for 18th after a final round of 79 (75-76-79/230). Nochta was even through the first four holes before bogeying seven and eight. She came back with a four in the par-5 ninth hole but jumped back to +2 with a bogey on 11. She double bogeyed 14 and after three straight pars added another bogey on 18. Nochta finished the round with bogeys on one and two for a 7-over score.
Playing in her second tournament of the year, freshman Kate Coons tied for 29th with a 77 in Tuesday's final round (79-77-77/233). After bogeys on two of the first three holes, Coons settled to go -1 over the next six with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole. She remained at +1 with pars through the back nine but hit trouble when she hit the first hole, posting a six on the par-4. She would bogey holes two and three to finish at +5.
Freshman Pamela Burneski posted an 79 in Tuesday's final round to finish tied for 29th (77-77-79/233). Burneski's day started slow with a double bogey on five. She pared eight of the next nine holes but was tripped up with a bogey on seven and added another on 15 to move to +4. Pars in 16, 17 and 18 were followed by a triple bogey on one that put her at +7 for the round. She closed the day with three straight pars.
Junior Cecilia Orevik ended the tournament on a high note with a birdie, giving her an 80 for the round and putting her tied for 38th (82-73-80/235). Orevik's round began with a double bogey on six, followed by three straight pars. She added a bogey on 10 and dropped to +6 with a bogey on 14 and a double on 15. She recorded three pars before another double bogey on one and moved to +9 with a bogey on hole two. After a par on three, she finished the day with a birdie on four for an 8-over 80.
Senior Kellye Belcher tied for 45th after carding an 80 on Monday (79-78-80/237). Belcher opened the day with a triple bogey on four but settled down with pars on the next five holes. She made the turn with a bogey on 10 and added a double bogey on 12 to jump to +6. A double bogey on 12, followed by a bogey on 13 added three more strokes to her score. Belcher would par four of the next five holes but did record a six on the par-5 15th hole. She closed the day with six straight pars.
The Hoosiers conclude their fall season Nov. 2-3 at the 2009 Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas.
