SETTING THE SCENE
• Indiana returns to Bloomington for just its fourth home match of the season for a local derby with Butler.
• The Hoosiers are looking to shake off a 3-0 loss at No. 11 UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 2.
• Indiana is 1-1-1 on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium this season.
• After tonight the Hoosiers will play four of their next five matches on the road.
NEWS AND NOTES
• The Hoosiers were shut out for the third time this season in a 3-0 loss at No. 11 UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 2.
• IU has also been shut out by No. 1 Akron (1-0) and No. 5 St. John's (0-0).
• Indiana is now 1-3-1 against top-25 teams this season.
• Indiana had 11 shots against the Gauchos, six of which were on frame.
• Over its last three games, 21 of IU's 36 shots have been on goal (58 percent).
• In the three games prior, IU had put 16 of 46 on frame (35 percent).
• Indiana recorded its second three-goal match of the year in a 3-0 win over No. 13 Kentucky on Sept. 29.
• IU is 2-0 when scoring three or more goals.
• Andy Adlard's game-winning score against the Wildcats in the 30th minute marked the only time this year that IU has scored a goal in the first half.
• Earning the start in the second half against UK, redshirt freshman Nick Blevins saw his first career shot result in a goal.
• With an assist on Nick Blevins' goal, sophomore Will Bruin has recorded at least one point in five of nine matches.
• The Hoosiers improved to 16-0-3 in Big Ten openers with a 1-0 win at Wisconsin on Sept. 25.
• Bruin leads the way offensively for Indiana in goals (5), points (11) and shots (33).
• Sophomore Tommy Meyer recorded his first career point with an assist on Bruin's goal against the Badgers.
• Soffner recorded a shutout in his first career Big Ten match with the 1-0 blanking of Wisconsin.
• Eric Alexander has the best percentage of on-frame attempts (5 or more) with 10 of his 15 shots this season on goal (66 percent).
• Lee Hagedorn has the best percentage of all with 50 percent of his shot attempts (1 of 2) going in the net.
• Indiana is averaging 14.2 shots per game, 1.33 goals per game and 6.22 shots on-goal per game.
• In tournament play this year, Indiana won the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament (2-0), finished second at the University of Akron Tournament (1-1) and third at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic (0-1-1).
• A total of 3,920 fans were on hand for the season opener against St. John's on Sept. 4, a game which ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
• Butler is 6-1-1 on the season and is coming off a 0-0 double overtime tie at Loyola (Ill.) on Friday.
• The Bulldogs are 3-1-1 away from home this season.
• Boris Gatzky leads the team with three goals and has taken a team-best 36 shots. He is also tops in scoring with seven points.
• Kyle Vondenbenken is the assist leader with three and also has a goal to his credit.
• Goalkeepers Nick Hegeman and Fabian Knopfler have split time in the net. Hegeman has started five matches, allowing 2 goals for a 0.46 GAA. Knopfler has appeared in four matches with three starts, alloing two scores for a 0.52 GAA.
• Butler has scored 11 goals this season while conceding four. The Bulldogs have outshot their opponets by a 117-82 margin.
• Head coach Kelly Findley is in his fourth season at Butler and is 35-22-11 at the helm of the program.
• He is assisted by David Costa, Steve Cox and Bryce Cooper.
SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana leads the series, 18-1-1. The series began in 1991 with a 5-0 Indiana victory in Indianapolis.
• The Hoosiers have won five straight matches against Butler.
• IU's only loss came in 1995, a 1-0 defeat in Bloomington in an NCAA Tournament game.
• Indiana has outscored the Bulldogs 16-2 over the last five meetings.
• Daniel Kelly scored the game-winning goal against the Bulldogs last year just 11 seconds into the match. Neil Wilmarth added an insurance goal in the 67th minute.
• Lee Hagedorn and Eric Alexander provided the goals in a 2-0 win in Bloomington in 2007.
INDIANA vs. HORIZON LEAGUE
• Indiana is 58-6-3 against teams from the Horizon League. Teams in the Horizon League that play men's soccer are Butler, Cleveland State, Detroit, UW Green Bay, Loyola (Ill.), UIC, Valparaiso, Wright State and UW-Milwaukee.
• IU is 18-1-1 against Butler, 15-5-1 against Cleveland State, 4-0 against UW Green Bay, 4-0 against UIC and 17-0-1 against UW Milwaukee.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Andy Adlard's two goals against No. 13 Kentucky marked his first career multiple-goal game.
• It was the first multiple-goal game by a Hoosier since Will Bruin had a pair of goals in a 3-2 OT win at Evansville on Sept. 30, 2008.
• Five of Indiana's nine matches have been one-goal affairs. IU is 3-2 in those games.
• Eleven of Indiana's 12 goals this season have come after the halftime break
• Three of Indiana's 12 goals have come off set pieces.
• Sophomore Tommy Meyer and his father, Keith Meyer, are the first father-son combination to play soccer at Indiana. Meyer played for the Hoosiers in 1980 and 1982-84, winning NCAA titles in 1982 and 1983.
• Indiana played its 100th Big Ten regular season match on Sept. 25, a 1-0 win at Wisconsin. The Hoosiers have won 85 percent (81-10-9) of their Big Ten regular season matches.
ADLARD NAMED BIG TEN OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• After coming up with a pair of goals, including the game winner, in a 3-0 win over No. 13 Kentucky last week, junior Andy Adlard was named the co-Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 5. It is the first Big Ten weekly honor for Adlard.
• Adlard helped Indiana to its first win over a ranked opponent this season with the 3-0 win over the Wildcats on Tuesday. The Hartland, Wis., native netted two goals, including the game-winner off a header in the 30th minute. He put the game out of reach with his second score of the match and third of the season with a shot to the lower-right corner to give the Hoosiers a 2-0 advantage. On Friday at No. 11 UC Santa Barbara, Adlard led the Hoosiers with a three shots, two of which were on frame. Currently Adlard is second on the team in goals (3), total points (8) and shots (26).
USING HIS HEAD
• In the game of soccer, the focus is usually on the use of your feet. But for sophomore Will Bruin, it has been all about his head so far in 2009.
• Three of Bruin's five goals this season have been headers. Two have come off corner kicks from teammate Andy Adlard, while his third was off a free kick from Joe Tolen.
• Bruin finally used his foot to put home the game-winner against FIU on Sept. 20.
• He added another game winner with his foot in a 1-0 win at Wisconsin on Sept. 25.
UCSB RECAP
• Playing in front of a crowd of 10,114, Indiana fell by a 3-0 score at UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 2.
• UCSB took a 1-0 lead at 38:03 on a goal from Danny Barrera with the assist to Michael Tetteh. Tetteh took the ball into the corner and sent in a cross to Barerra who hit it home for the score.
• The Gauchos extended their lead to 2-0 on a goal from Machael David in the 51st minute. David broke free and was facing Luis Soffner one-on-one, where he simply went to his left around Soffner and calmly played the ball in for the score. It was 3-0 Gauchos in the 61st minute on a Michael Nonni score.
• With 30:13 left in the match, Andy Adlard sent in a free kick that sent UCSB goalkeeper Sam Hayden diving to his right for the stop. Just minutes earlier, Adlard had broken free with the ball but coming in at a hard angle on the right side he tried to maneuver his shot around the goalkeeper and ended up send the ball just wide of the frame.
• Will Bruin took a shot across his body with just over eight minutes to play but Hayden smothered the ball for the stop. The Hoosiers finished the match with 11 shots, led by three each from Adlard and Bruin.
• Less than two minutes into the match, Bruin was fouled just outside the right side of the box, setting up a free kick opportunity for Adlard. The junior got the ball into the box but it was headed away by a UCSB defender.
• With 3:30 gone off the clock to start the match, Balchan missed on an open shot after the ball came to him on the rebound. Darren Yeagle had played a ball ahead to Adlard that was kicked out by the defender, setting up a corner kick. A UCSB defender headed the ball out to the foot of Balchan but he sent his shot high. Less than two minutes later, Hayden stopped a sliding shot from Adlard.
• Bruin got underneath a Yeagle pass with 11:52 to play in the first half but Hayden blocked the ball and caught it as it popped back up in the air.
• Bruin had a shot right at the buzzer that was blocked by Hayden to take the teams into the halftime break. IU led the shot tally at the break, 6-5.
RANKING THE HOOSIERS
• Indiana ranks among the top 25 in all five polls.
• College Soccer News dropped the Hoosiers five spots to No. 11.
• Soccer America moved IU down five spots to No. 15.
• The Hoosiers went down five spots to No. 14 in the NSCAA poll.
• Soccer Times moved the Hoosiers down seven spots to No. 14.
• Indiana is down one spot in the TopDrawerSoccer men's tournament 48 ranking to No. 12.
• Four Big Ten teams are in the Soccer America top 25 this week with No. 12 Northwestern, No. 15 Indiana, No. 18 Ohio State and No. 24 Penn State.
• Two Big Ten teams grace the NSCAA top 25 with IU at No. 14 and Northwestern at No. 21. Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State are also receiving votes.
