BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the second time in as many Big Ten home matches, the Indiana men's soccer team saw a late goal become its undoing as Ohio State's score in the 93rd minute gave it a 1-0 win over the Hoosiers Sunday afternoon on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
"I told the team I really didn't know what to say," said head coach Mike Freitag. "We have never been in this situation before. We talked about things we did well, things we didn't and what we need to do from here on out. That is the way we approached it.
"We'll just go back to work. That is all we can do."
The Hoosiers drop to 8-8-1 on the season, 2-3 in Big Ten play. Indiana has just one regular-season match remaining as it plays host to Penn State on Friday at 3 p.m. The Hoosiers will also play host to the 2009 Big Ten Tournament, Nov. 12-15.
A scramble in front of the goal resulted in the Buckeyes Eric Shrigley poking home the game-winning score at 92:34, giving Ohio State (9-4-4, 3-2) just its second win-ever over Indiana and its first in Bloomington since Indiana went to varsity status in 1973.
"I felt like we played well," said junior defender Daniel Kelly. "We just need to get some goals. Maybe it was my fault in the back right there, but we just need to move forward."
The game was not a pretty one to watch with a combined 32 fouls and three yellow cards issued. The teams combined for just seven shots in the first half, with Ohio State's best attempt coming five minutes in as Andrew Magill unleashed a liner that IU goalkeeper Nemanja Kostic dove to his right to save.
On the offensive end for the Hoosiers, Will Bruin took the most dangerous of IU's three first-half shots as he broke free with 22:50 to play and took a shot that was deflected over the end line. Kelly got his head on the ensuing Andy Adlard corner kick, but his attempt sailed high.
In the second half Adlard took a shot from distance in the 54th minute that was saved by OSU goalkeeper Matt Lampson. That was one of four saves on the day for Lampson, three of which came in the second half.
With nine minutes remaining in regulation, Bruin took a quick shot that was again saved by Lampson. In the 85th minute, Matt Wiet got one of is patented long throws into the box but the ball was kicked away by a Buckeye defender.
Indiana finished the match with an 8-7 advantage in shots and took four corner kicks to the Buckeyes' three. Kostic made four saves in his second start in goal.
