SETTING THE SCENE
• Indiana is making its 23rd consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its 24th overall as it plays host to Louisville in the first round Thursday night.
• The Hoosiers own an all-time record of 74-24 4 in Tournament play, with an Division I-best 74 wins and .745 winning percentage.
• The Hoosiers are looking to avenge a 4-0 loss to the Cardinals on Oct. 21 in Louisville. Louisville has never beaten the Hoosiers in Bloomington.
• This is the first time Louisville and Indiana have met in postseason play.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Indiana's 23-straight NCAA Tournament appearances is the third longest active streak in Division I (Virginia-29; UCLA-27).
• The Hoosiers have an all-time record of 26-4-1 in NCAA Tournament openers. Their last opening loss came in the second round in 2005 (2-0 vs. Notre Dame).
• The Hoosiers advanced to the quarterfinal of the NCAA Tournament in 2008 before falling at St. John's in overtime, 3-2.
• Indiana has made 17 College Cup appearances, most recently in 2004.
• Twelve of Indiana's 18 regular-season opponents made the 2009 NCAA Tournament field. Out of those 12, eight earned top-16 seeds.
• Indiana is not a seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. In 2002, only the top eight teams were seeded. They moved to a 16-team seeding format in 2003.
• Indiana has scored a goal within the first four minutes seconds of the second half in each of the last two matches (48:07 vs. Ohio State; 45:40 vs. Penn State; 45:20 vs. Wisconsin).
• Andy Adlard's goal in the fifth minute against Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals was just the fourth first-half goal for the Hoosiers this season.
• Adlard has scored a goal against the Buckeyes in three of the last four meetings.
• Will Bruin's second half goal against Ohio State in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament gives him a goal in each of the last two games.
• He as scored at least one point in three straight matches with an assist in IU's 2-1 win over Penn State on Nov. 6.
• Indiana's 2-0 win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals gives it an all-time record of 34-3-4 against the Badgers.
• Bruins' game-winning goal against the Badgers was his first score since Oct. 14 at Notre Dame.
• Bruin leads the team in scoring with 20 points (8g, 4a).
• Bruin currently leads the Big Ten in shots (84) and is third in game-winning goals (4).
• Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Luis Soffner is tied for third in the Big Ten in shutouts with seven.
• Indiana is 3-2 in its last five matches.
• Senior midfielder Eric Alexander has assisted on the game-winning goal in each of the last two victories (Penn State, Wisconsin).
• Indiana tied its season high with 22 shot attempts vs. Wisconsin (other- vs. Michigan State).
• The loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals put the Hoosiers at 3-6-1 against top-25 teams in 2009.
• The Hoosiers are 8-1 when scoring two or more goals.
• Will Bruin's seventh goal of the season against Wisconsin was also his fourth game winner of the year.
• Lee Hagedorn scored his third goal of the season on Nov. 6 against Penn State. That matches his career goal total heading into the 2009 season.
• Daniel Kelly's first goal of the season was also the game winner against Penn State. It was his fourth career game-winning score.
• Soffner picked up in the win in goal after coming on for an injured Nemanja Kostic in the second half.
• The Hoosiers have yet to take a penalty kick this season.
• IU is 1-3-1 in overtime contests this season.
• This is just the second time in school history that Indiana has lost nine matches in a season (12-9-1 in 1985). IU entered the NCAA Tournament that season with a record of 11-8-1.
• The Hoosiers have never had a losing Big Ten record but have finished at .500 twice (2008 and 2009).
• Indiana has scored 25 goals this season, while allowing 24 goals.
• Indiana's lowest goal total to date is 31 in 2007. Indiana has scored fewer than 40 goals just six times in 36 season, not including 2009.
• The Hoosiers snapped a 300+-minute scoreless streak with Lee Hagedorn's goal in the 68th minute for a 2-0 win over Evansville on Oct. 28.
• It was Hagedorn's first game-winning goal of the season and his second score overall.
• Nick Blevins added an insurance goal in the 81st minute, his second of the season.
• Blevins has appeared in just six matches and taken just five shots, two of which have resulted in goals.
• Freshman Matt Wiet's long throw-in set up Blevins' goal as he simply had to tap the ball in.
• Senior transfer Nemanja Kostic earned his first start in goal against Evansville and picked up the shutout, making just one save in 90 minutes of action.
• Kostic made his first career appearance for Indiana in the match at Louisville on Oct. 21, playing the final 45 minutes between the pipes.
• Will Bruin had a season high nine shots, , three of which were on goal, in the 1-0 double overtime loss to Michigan State on Oct. 18.
• Indiana stretched its win streak over Notre Dame to three with a 3-0 win on Oct. 14. Darren Yeagle and Will Bruin scored for the Hoosiers, but the game winner came in the 66th minute courtesy of an own goal by the Fighting Irish.
• Freshman goalkeeper Luis Soffner recorded his sixth shutout of the season in the win at ND.
• Andy Adlard scored the game-winning goal at Michigan on Oct. 10 in the 54th minute, his fourth goal of the season and the second game winner.
• Three of Adlard's five goals this year have come when he plays off the bench.
• Soffner recorded his fifth shutout of the year in the win over the Wolverines.
• Yeagle's goal against Butler on Oct. 7 was his first since his freshman season in 2006. He had seven goals that year and was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
• IU is 3-0 when scoring three or more goals with wins over New Mexico (3-2), Kentucky (3-0) and Notre Dame (3-0).
• Conversely, the Hoosiers are 0-3 when giving up three or more goals.
• Earning the start in the second half against UK, redshirt freshman Nick Blevins saw his first career shot result in a goal.
• The Hoosiers improved to 16-0-3 in Big Ten openers with a 1-0 win at Wisconsin on Sept. 25.
• Sophomore Tommy Meyer recorded his first career point with an assist on Bruin's goal against the Badgers.
• Soffner recorded a shutout in his first career Big Ten match with the 1-0 blanking of Wisconsin.
• Indiana is averaging 14.2 shots per game, 1.25 goals per game and 5.7 shots on-goal per game.
• In tournament play this year, Indiana won the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament (2-0), finished second at the University of Akron Tournament (1-1) and third at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic (0-1-1).
• A total of 3,920 fans were on hand for the season opener against St. John's on Sept. 4, a game which ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
• Louisville is 13-2-4 on the season and advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament before falling to Notre Dame in penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie.
• The Cardinals have gotten out to a fast start in games, scoring 22 first half goals while allowing just one. They have scored 24 goals in the second period for a 46-12 scoring advantage over opponents.
• Colin Rolfe, a first-team All-BIG EAST selection, leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and two assists for 22 points. Freddie Braun is right on his heels with eight goals and four assists (20 points).
• Senior defender Phil Edginton has started all 19 games and was named the co-BIG EAST Defender of the Year.
• Goalkeeper Andre Boudreaux has started all 19 matches in goal, playing 1798:37 minutes and allowing 12 scores for a 0.60 GAA.
• Head coach Ken Lolla and assistant coaches Brian Maisonneuve and Jeremy Proud were named the 2009 BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana leads the all-time series, 15-2-0.
• Louisville won the regular season meeting in 2009 with a 4-0 victory in Louisville.
• The Hoosiers' only other loss came in 2007, a 2-1 overtime defeat in Louisville.
• Andy Adlard had the game-winning goal for the Hoosiers in 2008
• It was the first time Louisville had scored a goal against the Hoosiers since 1992, breaking a string of nine-straight shutouts.
• In all the Cardinals have scored nine goals in 17 meetings as IU holds a commanding 53-9 scoring advantage. That number is helped by a 14-0 Indiana victory in 1983.
LAST TIME THESE TWO TEAMS MET...
• No. 25 Indiana (7-6-1) fell behind early and could not get an offensive rhythm going in a 4-0 loss to No. 8 Louisville (10-2-2) on Oct. 21 t at Cardinal Park in Louisville, Ky.
• Indiana found itself down 1-0, 5:54 into the match when a free kick from Kenney Walker found the head of Freddie Braun who put it home for the score.
• Seven minutes later the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead with Mark Knight crossing the ball on the ground to Colin Rolfe, who got behind the defense and sent in a chip shot. Rolfe gave Louisville a 3-0 lead in the 57th minute as he made his way through the IU defense and placed a shot into the lower left. Louisville added its fourth goal of the night on a score from Knight at 82:27.
• Indiana went a man down at 73:37 when sophomore forward Will Bruin was given a red card for dissent.
• The Hoosiers' best attempt of the first half came in the 37th minute when a shot from Alec Purdie was dropped by Cardinals goalkeeper Andre Boudreaux. Lee Hagedorn was there to get the rebound, but he could not settle the ball and get a shot off before the defense set in.
• Senior transfer Nemanja Kostic made his first appearance in an IU uniform, earning the start in the second half. Louisville natives Darren Yeagle and Kevin Bick both saw action in the match, with Yeagle earning the start and Bick coming on in the second half. Junior Alex Boler also made his first career appearance for the Hoosiers.
• In the second half, sophomore Will Bruin got his head on the end of a cross from Tim Wylie but the sophomore popped his shot over the cross bar. Bruin took another shot on the run in the 69th minute, forcing Boudreaux to make the save.
• Goalkeeper Luis Soffner was tested early, making his first save of the match less than two minutes in as Louisville got a throw in behind the IU defense and he was forced to come out and make a kick save. Soffner finished with two saves in the first half.
• Indiana was credited with just two shots in the first half, both coming from Bruin. Louisville put up nine shots and had two corner kicks to the Hoosiers' one.
FAMILIAR FACE
• Louisville assistant coach Brian Maisonneuve is no stranger to Bloomington as he was a four-year letterwinner and two-time All-American for the Hoosiers.
• Maisonneuve played at Indiana from 1991-94, earning All-America honors in 1993 and 1994. He was the 1994 Hermann Trophy winner as well as a two-time Big Ten Player of the Year (1993, 1994).
• Maisonneuve scored 14 goals to lead Indiana to a 23-3 record, Big Ten title and trip to the NCAA title game in 1994.
• Indiana posted a record of 75-9-5 during his playing career.
INDIANA vs. THE BIG EAST
• Indiana is 1-1-1 against Big East teams this season after a 0-0 double overtime tie with St. John's in the season opener, a 3-0 win at Notre Dame on Oct. 14 and a 4-0 loss at Louisville on Oct. 21.
• Indiana was 2-1-1 against Big East foes last season, defeating Notre Dame (3-1) and Louisville (1-0), while falling to St. John's (3-2 in OT) and playing South Florida to a 0-0 tie.
• The Hoosiers are 73-16-7 all-time against teams currently in the Big East.
DID YOU KNOW?
• Five of Indiana's nine losses have come to teams ranked in Soccer American's final poll (No. 1 Akron, No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 8 Ohio State, No. 12 UC Santa Barbara, No. 14 Louisville).
• Andy Adlard's two goals against No. 13 Kentucky marked his first career multiple-goal game.
• It was the second multiple-goal game for a Hoosier in a three-game span. Will Bruin had a pair of goals in a 2-1 OT win over Florida International on Sept. 20.
• Three of Adlard's five goals this season have come when he plays off the bench. And two of the five have been game winners.
• Seven of Adlard's 12 career goals have been game winners.
• 10 of Indiana's 20 matches have been one-goal affairs. IU is 5-5 in those games.
• Twenty of Indiana's 23 goals this season have come after the halftime break
• Four of Indiana's 23 goals have come off set pieces, and one has come off a throw-in.
• Sophomore Tommy Meyer and his father, Keith Meyer, are the first father-son combination to play soccer at Indiana. Meyer played for the Hoosiers in 1980 and 1982-84, winning NCAA titles in 1982 and 1983.
• Indiana played its 100th Big Ten regular season match on Sept. 25, a 1-0 win at Wisconsin. The Hoosiers have won 85 percent (82-10-9) of their Big Ten regular season matches.
