BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women’s water polo team has released its 2010 schedule, head coach Barry King announced today. The Hoosiers will be tested throughout the season, as they will compete against many of the top teams in the country, beginning with the Michigan Kick-Off on January 23 and 24.
“As is the case every season, we have sought out the highest level of competition,” said King, entering his 13th season at Indiana. “We will play the majority of the top 15 teams in the country. This team made great strides last year and had a number of near misses against highly ranked opponents. We have high expectations and plan on putting ourselves in the position to win those contests this year.”
The Hoosiers will then travel to La Jolla, Calif. on February 6 and 7 to take part in the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego.
“It will be nice to return to the Triton Invitational in San Diego this year,” said King. “The program has a history of success at that tournament and we look forward to adding to that.”
The following weekend, they will compete in the Bison Invitational at Bucknell.
Indiana will play their first home contests of the season on March 6 and 7 as they host the Elite Eight tournament at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The tournament will feature the eight schools that competed in the 2009 CWPA Eastern Championship and will be seeded as a tournament. Each team will play three games and the eight entrants are Indiana, Maryland, Hartwick, Brown, Michigan, Indiana, Bucknell, Princeton and Harvard.
“We are very excited about hosting the Elite Eight tournament,” said King. “It is a league preview of the eight best teams in the conference. It will give us a real solid indication of our progress up to that point.”
The Hoosiers will then head back to California for five road games in five days (March 13-17) where they will take on Santa Clara, CSU Monterey Bay, Sonoma State, Pacific, and San Jose State. Indiana will round out the trip by participating in the University of Pacific Invite on March 20.
The next week, Indiana will host the Fluid Five, which will include rival Michigan, California State East Bay, Gannon, Mercyhurst, and Wagner. The Hoosiers will then make a return trip to Ann Arbor for a clash with Michigan on April 3.
After a week off, the Hoosiers will then get their final tune-up for postseason play as they travel to Tempe where they will face off against San Diego State and Arizona State on April 17 and 18.
Indiana will then head back to Ann Arbor on April 24 for the CWPA Western Division Championship. The top two teams will then advance to the Eastern Championship the following weekend at Maryland, with an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships on the line. The 2010 NCAA Championship will be held in San Diego, Calif. on May 14-16 at San Diego State University.
