Ren Han Makes Big Appearance in Wall Street Journal

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Ren Han, a junior on the IU Men's Golf team, could be found on the front page of the Wall Street Journal sports section on Friday (Nov. 27.) Han was interviewed for a story regarding the rise of golf in China.
The native of Shenzhen, China, is the first Chinese-born athlete to play men's collegiate golf in the United States. Han also made headlines in late October after jumping out to a one-stroke lead after round one of the Asian Amateur Championship.

One of the great hopes so far in Chinese golf is a 21-year-old named Han Ren, who shot a few holes with Mr. Woods when the U.S. star visited in 2001. That event "was really one of the moments that motivated me" Mr. Han says now. "I've never played a round with more than five spectators, but when I was with Tiger it was 5,000 people, and I was kind of nervous. But I knew I also wanted to be on that stage."
Still, without an ecosystem to thrive in back home, Mr. Han was sent overseas to take his game to the next level--first to Canada in 2003 and then to Indiana University, where he is a junior.
"The sport is not yet that popular in China, although I can see it growing so much bigger in the next decade," Mr. Han says. "I don't attract a huge crowd when I play everytime, but I feel a huge difference; there's so much more support from spectators in Asia compared to three or four years ago."
