BIELSKO-BIALA, Poland - Martyna Popik is making a trip back to her home in Poland during IU's winter break over the next few weeks. She will be periodically checking in with IUHoosiers.com, sharing blogs and photos from her travels.
Popik was the first international player in IU Volleyball history and earned a letter during her freshman season. Below is the first installment of "Popik's Postcard"...
"So I made it. I'm home again, after seven months, and I'm really excited. I drove with Jordan Haverly to Chicago because luckily she was done with her finals on the same day. We packed up her car to the maximum (as you can see in the pictures). In Chicago I was very surprised when I saw Gosia Lech, my really good friend and a sophomore setter from the University of Louisville. During our nine-hour flight we talked about our volleyball seasons, and in general, about us being in the United States.
Right now I'm sitting at home because there is -4 degrees F outside!!! I'm also waiting for my dad and my brother to come back home tonight (my dad is a head coach of one of the professional volleyball teams, and he works about three hours away from my hometown. My brother, Kacper, goes to special volleyball school in Czestochowa, about two hours away, and he lives in the dorm). I went to see my brother's match this past weekend. It was so good to see him. He's 17 and about 6-4 now, which is crazy. He's a lefty setter. I also went to see one of my best friends play. Many of my friends played or still play volleyball somewhere in Poland. I also went out with my high school friends, and it was really good to see everyone and talk about our experiences in college.
Now, like I said, I'm waiting for the rest of my family to get here, so we can start to celebrate Christmas time.
Next weekend I will have some pics of my family and our traditional Christmas Eve dinner, and much more!!!"
Best wishes,
Tin
