CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - Indiana has advanced to the semifinals of the first Annual Big Ten Match Play Championships following a win over arch-rival Purdue on Friday. The Hoosiers' 4-2 victory over Purdue sets up a Saturday morning showdown versus the Michigan State Spartans.

"The rivalry with Purdue was obvious from the first to the last hole of the day," said Head Coach Mike Mayer. "It's nice to get a win over the Boilermakers to start the season."

Each team in the event has a six-member lineup with the No. 6 slot teeing off first and concluding with each squad's top player facing each other in the final individual showdown. In the case of a 3-3 tie, whichever teams wins more overall holes is awarded the win.
"It was a hard fought match today," said Mayer. "Purdue played well, but we found a way to win a few more holes and get the win."
After the Boilermakers captured the first point of the match, Indiana responded by winning the next three points. A pair of IU true freshmen, Chase Wright and David Erdy, supplied the first two points for the Cream and Crimson. Wright won 3 and 2 over Purdue's Maximo Kopp while Erdy defeated William Sjaichudin 2 and 1.
Seth Brandon was also a victor on Friday, riding a three-hole advantage after the first nine holes to a 3 and 2 triumph over Erich Johnston in the No. 3 slot.
Purdue's Tyler Duncan kept his team alive with a 2 and 1 win in the second slot. With a 3-2 IU advantage, Jorge Campillo simply needed a half to clinch the team victory. Campillo did more than just that, however, as he dominated following `the turn." Things were all square after nine holes before Campillo snagged the next five holes for a 5 and 4 winner over Nakarintra Ratanakul.
"The match play is so different from anything we have done in the last 30 years of collegiate golf," said Mayer. "It is hard to adjust. I thought we responded very, very well."
