BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior catcher Josh Phegley has garnered two more Preseason All-America honors, this time grabbing laurels from Baseball America and Rivals.com. Both publications tabbed Phegley as the top catcher in the nation. He is the only Big Ten player on either list.
Phegley has been named a First Team Preseason All-American by several publications, including the National College Baseball Writers of America, Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Ping!Baseball. Phegley is also a member of the College Baseball Foundation's Wallace Watch List, where he is joined by teammate Matt Bashore.
The Terre Haute native, who collected All-America honors from the NCBWA, the American Baseball Coaches Association and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper last season, finished off one of the best offensive years in IU history in 2008. The Terre Haute native posted a .438 average - the second-best clip in the nation - to go along with 15 home runs, 80 RBI and 20 doubles. He also finished second in the Big Ten with 69 runs, trailing only teammate and Cincinnati Reds draftee Andrew Means in that category.
The Hoosiers will begin their 2009 campaign against West Virginia in the Big Ten/BIG EAST Challenge on Feb. 20. IU will also play Georgetown and South Florida in the three-day event in the greater Tampa, Fla., area.
