BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana maintained its excellence in the classroom by winning the NFHCA National Academic Team Award for the ninth straight year. Since the program’s founding in 2000, head coach Amy Robertson’s players have held a GPA above 3.0. This year’s award marks the second consecutive season in which the Hoosiers’ team GPA has finished among the nation’s top-five. The Hoosiers finished in a tie for third with Yale University, recording a team GPA of 3.46. La Salle University led the way with a 3.56.
Robertson said that the ability of her players to manage the schedule of a true student-athlete has been crucial to the success of the team both in the classroom and on the field.
“This is a team of true student-athletes who have learned the art of time management, balancing life, hockey and academics and have stayed focused on striving for their best,” said Robertson. “Our team has been committed to raising the bar both on the field and off and has consistently performed at a high academic level. I am very proud of their dedication and hard work and I am proud of the academic distinction that they have brought to this program.”
Indiana had the best GPA of all Big Ten teams and was one of six conference programs to win the award. In December, the field hockey team had 14 student-athletes from the field hockey program named Academic All-Big Ten honorees. That total was the best in the conference, as well as the highest number of honorees in program history. Junior Brittney Hacken was honored as one of only 10 student-athletes across all fall sports in the conference to maintain an unblemished 4.0 GPA.
The Hoosiers will return to action with a slate of spring games that will kick off on Sunday, March 29. Stay tuned to www.IUHoosiers.com for an upcoming announcement of the spring schedule.
