BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kelsey Campbell and Amy Moore scored three goals each to lead a dominant Hoosier offensive attack in a 12-5 win against Cal State Monterey Bay in Indiana’s second game of the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest. The Hoosiers also received solid performances by Kelly Palmberg and Lauren Wyckoff, both tallying two goals.
Katie Carson made her second start in a row at goalie, making 11 saves and one steal.
CSMB struck first with a lob shot goal two minutes into the game, but Indiana controlled the rest of the way. The Hoosier offense was consistent throughout with three goals in each period.
“It was nice to see our offense capitalize on our scoring opportunities,” Indiana head coach Barry King said. “We just need to keep improving and take this type of intensity into the rest of the weekend.”
Hannon scored the first Hoosier goal when she stayed with a missed shot and tipped it in to tie the score 1-1. Nicole Redder scored the next Indiana goal less than a minute later, followed by a Moore goal after a feed from Hannon to give the Hoosiers a 3-1 lead after one period.
CSMB scored on a six on five chance early in the second quarter to pull within a goal, and this was as close as the game would get the rest of the way. Indiana countered with a Wyckoff backhand score after a pass from Redder, and then the Hoosiers got goals from Palmberg and Moore to lift the Hoosier lead to 6-2 with a minute to play in the first half. CSMB ended the half with a buzzer beating tip-in goal to make the score 6-3 at the break.
An Indiana flurry of goals to start the third quarter broke the game wide open, with Moore, Campbell, and Palmberg connecting on scores in a span of three minutes. Each of those goals were scored on Hoosier six on five opportunities. CSMB scored twice late in the period to cut the margin to 9-5 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Wyckoff scored from long range and Campbell added two goals to bring the final score to 12-5.
The Hoosiers (3-6) will be back in action on Saturday at 4:45 p.m. PT/ 7:45 p.m. ET against Pacific.
