BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 19 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team heads to Palo Alto, Calif. to compete in the Stanford Invite on February 7-8. Indiana will once again battle some of the nation's top teams, as they will take on No. 2 Stanford, No. 7 Arizona State, and No. 1 USC. The Hoosiers will also play a fourth game against a team that will be determined by pool play.
Indiana comes into the tournament after finishing the Michigan Kick-off with a 1-3 record. The Hoosiers played four-time defending national champion No. 3 UCLA very competitively, but lost 10-3. Indiana was also defeated by No. 5 California and No. 14 CSU Northridge, before dominating Colorado State 11-3 to wrap up the opening weekend.
The Hoosiers are led in scoring by sophomore Amy Moore with seven goals. Senior Maggie Hannon has also been active offensively with five goals this season. Defensively, sophomore Nicole Redder is leading Indiana with seven steals.
In goal, freshman Cassie Wyckoff has played well to begin her collegiate career. Wyckoff grabbed 25 saves in three starts at the Michigan Kick-off, including a 12 save performance against CSU Northridge. Junior Katie Carson got the start against Colorado State, making 11 saves while allowing only three goals.
A Closer Look at the Opponents
No. 2 Stanford
The Cardinal comes into their invitational with a 1-0 record after defeating Santa Clara 17-3. Last season, Stanford finished 27-5, including a third place finish at nationals. The Cardinal returns their leading scorer from the past three seasons, All-American senior Lauren Silver. They also return two other All-Americans, junior driver Kelly Eaton and sophomore goalie Amber Oland.
Indiana is winless against Stanford in the five games between the schools. The last meeting for these teams was in 2005, with the Cardinal prevailing 11-4.
No. 7 Arizona State
Arizona State enters the Stanford Invite with an impressive 6-0 record, with their most recent win coming over No. 12 Hartwick 16-6. In 2008, the Sun Devils finished with a 21-13 overall record, which set a program record for most wins in a season. Arizona State is led by senior Addison McGrath, who has scored multiple goals in each game this season. McGrath was a first team All-American in 2008 after scoring 81 goals for the Sun Devils. Arizona State is young at the goalie position, with freshman Dana Harvey and sophomore Kaitlyn Morris splitting time. They are replacing Caylinn Wallace, an All-American and four year starter for the Sun Devils.
Indiana leads the all-time series with Arizona State 3-2. However, the Hoosiers were defeated by the Sun Devils last season 12-3 at the Michigan Kick-off.
No. 1 USC
USC returns a very experienced team that finished 21-8 last year, with a runner-up finish at nationals. The Trojans return seven of their top ten scorers from a season ago. USC also welcomes back junior Kami Craig, who was a member of the silver medal U.S. National team that competed in the 2008 Olympic Games. Junior Tumua Anae returns at goal for USC after tallying 232 saves last season, as well as being named first team All-American.
The Hoosiers have a 0-4 record against USC all-time. The last game between the two teams was in 2005 where the Trojans won 9-5.
