Men's Soccer Adds Four For 2009 Season

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University head men's soccer coach Mike Freitag announced today that Graham Basecke (Springfield, Mo./Glendale), Kevin Bick (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier), Caleb Konstanski (Bloomington, Ind./South) and Matt Wiet (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) have chosen to continue their soccer careers with the Hoosiers.
Basecke led Glendale to the Class 3 state title game, the best-ever finish for the school. The squad earned four straight district titles and Basecke was rewarded with second-team all-state honors as a senior. The central midfielder was named to the All-Ozarks team and finished his final season with eight goals and 11 assists. Basecke was a second-team all-district and all-conference selection as a junior.
"Graham is a competitor," Freitag said. "He is a talented player who puts everything on the line to win. He always seems to be in the middle of the action, making good things happen for his team. Graham will make us better on both sides of the ball. His winning attitude, competitiveness, and skill will make him a valuable asset to the IU Soccer Program."
Playing for Springfield Soccer Club, his team won back-to-back Missouri State Cup titles (2007, 2008) and was a semifinalist at the 2007 Disney College Showcase. National Soccer Rankings placed the squad at No. 1 in the nation as of January 2009, while Top Drawer Soccer has the team in the No. 2 slot. Basecke played with current Hoosiers Tommy Meyer and Luis Soffner as a member of the ODP state team.
Bick is a two-time National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA)/adidas Boys High School All-American, as well as Kentucky's first two-time winner of the state's Mr. Soccer award. He was named the 2007 state Gatorade Player of the Year and was a first-team all-state pick in 2007 and 2008. He also led Saint Xavier to the state title as a junior and senior as the team compiled a record of 47-1-2 during those two years. In 2007 the team went undefeated at 25-0-2.
"Kevin is one of the premier players in the country," Freitag said. "He has a great soccer mind and great feet to go along with it. He is a very good passer, can score goals and could play a number of positions. I see him helping our offensive production immediately. I grew up watching his dad - Sam, who was a couple of years older than I and was an outstanding pro player. So I know Kevin is from good stock."
In his final three seasons Bick tallied 43 goals and 46 assists, including 21 goals and 19 assists as a forward in 2007. He moved to the midfield in 2008 where he finished with 12 goals and 14 assists. Bick has spent time as a member of the U.S. U-18 Men's National Team, traveling to Argentina and Uruguay in the summer of 2008, and took part in the Adidas Elite Soccer Program (ESP) in 2007. He played club ball with the Chicago Magic.
Bick comes from an athletic family as his father, Sam, played professionally in the NASL (Minnesota Kicks, San Jose Earthquakes) and MISL (St. Louis Steamers), and earned two caps with the U.S. Men's National Team in 1976. His older brother, Brian, played collegiately at West Virginia, while his other older brother, Dan, played football at Purdue.
Konstanski earned first-team all-state honors at South his senior season and is a two-time first-team all-conference selection. Over his junior and senior seasons he combined for 28 goals and 21 assists, finishing with 18 and 11, respectively, his senior season. He was also named the South team MVP as a junior and senior.
"Caleb is a home-grown talent," Freitag said. "I have watched him grow as a player in Cutter's Soccer and at Bloomington South. I am very proud of him. He has already joined the team this semester and performed very well. Caleb is a talented player who plays within himself. He is technically sound and very versatile. Caleb grew up an IU Soccer fan and I am so happy that he is now a part of our family."
Konstanski plays club soccer with the Bloomington Cutters and is a five-time Indiana ODP state team member (2003-05, 2007-08). He graduated early from South and enrolled at IU in January.
Wiet is the 2008 Huntington Bank/Ohio High School Magazine Boys Player of the Year, the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Year, Central District Player of the Year and OCC Central Division Player of the Year. He is a two-time All-Ohio and all-district honoree, as well as an OSSCA first team selection. He plays for Crew Soccer Academy, which made the US Soccer U-18 Developmental Academy national tournament final four and finished the season ranked third in the nation. Wiet was also named a 2008 NSCAA/adidas Boys High School All-American.
"Matt Wiet is from Columbus, Ohio, an area which has been good recruiting grounds for IU Soccer over recent years with players such as Danny O'Rourke, and current freshmen Nick Blevins," Freitag said. "Matt is in that same mold. He is a gifted player and reliable leader. Matt is the type of defender that goes unnoticed because he makes his job look easy. He is strong tackler and reads the game very well. I am so happy that Matt has chosen to be a Hoosier."
As a four-year starter at defender, Wiet was part of a team that recorded 43 shutouts in 79 matches. He scored 11 goals and assisted on 17 others, and served as team captain his junior and senior seasons. During his high school career the Wolves made two regional championship appearances and won four district titles. In 2008 the squad was 18-3-0, winning the Ohio Capital Conference championship and was a regional runner-up. In the classroom Wiet is a member of the National Honor Society and maintains above a 4.0 GPA with plans to become a doctor.
Indiana is coming off a 14-7-3 season in 2008 where it advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament and made its fourth straight appearance in the Big Ten Tournament championship match. The Hoosiers open the 2009 season on Sept. 4 against St. John's in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
