PALO ALTO, Calif. - The No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers (1-4) opened the Stanford Invite with an 11-2 loss to the host No. 2 Stanford Cardinal (3-0). The Hoosiers battled to overcome constant pressure applied by Stanford throughout the game, but ultimately could not muster enough offense.
"I thought we competed well after the opening minutes of the game against a very talented team," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We definitely have to do a better job of handling counter attacks."
Stanford got the scoring started quickly with three goals in the opening two minutes of the game. Indiana got on the board early in the second period when sophomore Nicole Redder threw a precise long range pass to freshman Jackie Köhli, who converted her first career goal. The Hoosiers went on to play a solid defensive second quarter before allowing three Stanford goals to close out the half with a 6-1 Cardinal edge.
Both defenses took over in the third quarter. Indiana was shut out in the period, meanwhile allowing only two Cardinal scores in the quarter.
Senior Maggie Hannon rounded out the Hoosier scoring attack midway through the fourth quarter off of an entry pass from Köhli. Stanford scored three fourth period goals to extend their lead.
Defensively, Indiana was led in steals by sophomore Kelsey Campbell with three. Freshman Cassie Wyckoff grabbed five saves and three steals in her fourth start in goal for Indiana. Junior Katie Carson also made two saves in eight minutes of action.
The Hoosiers will be back in action this afternoon at 3:15pm PT against No. 7 Arizona State.
