BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana head field hockey coach Amy Robertson announced the team’s 2009 signing class on Monday. The class is made up of three players, all of whom should contribute right away. The three incoming players are Brooke Borneman from Coopersburg, Pa., Hannah Boyer from Louisville, Ky., and Shareyna Chang from Hampton, Va.
Robertson is excited about the potential that this class brings to her team.
“We are proud and honored that Shareyna Chang, Brooke Borneman and Hannah Boyer have chosen to further their academic and athletic careers at Indiana University,” said Robertson. “All three are exceptional young women who will fill important roles and have the potential to make an immediate impact on our program’s success. We were looking for the right people who have established habits of success in the classroom and on the field and are willing to commit 100 percent to the process of striving to be the best that is within each of them.”
Brooke Borneman is a forward and a four-year letterwinner at Southern Lehigh for head coach Adrienne Searfoss. She becomes the eighth player on the IU roster from the Keystone State. She led the team to three Colonial League championships, a District XI championship and a state quarterfinal appearance. In her junior and senior campaigns she was named all-state, all-league and all-area. As a junior she posted 33 goals and put up 36 as a captain in her senior season. Her 36 scores earned her Team MVP honors as well. She was a Futures Elite player from 2006 to 2009, an ODS Selection in 2007 and played on the U.S. U-19 Chili Tour in 2008. She also played for XCalibur FHC. Borneman was also a four-year varsity lacrosse player. She has a sister, Robynn, and a brother, J.R. The daughter of John and Kelly Borneman intends to study Exercise Science.
“When I first met Brooke at a junior national camp she caught my eye immediately because of her comfort with the ball and her individual stick skills,” said Robertson. “Brooke is more of a finesse player who possesses speed, control, creativity and reads the game very well. She could play on the front line or as an inner because of her versatility and she is very well-rounded. She has a lot of experience playing hockey and will be able to make the college level adjustment very quickly.”
Hannah Boyer is a defender who joins rising junior Kelsey Kiper and rising senior Elizabeth Schmidt to maintain the number of Louisville products on the roster at three with the loss of senior standout Katie Kiper. She was a four-year varsity starter for DuPont Manual under the guidance of April White and Terri Kendall. She led the team to three district championships and two state semifinal appearances. Boyer won the U-19 National Indoor Tournament St. Louis Qualifier as a member of the IFHCK Warriors. She was named to the NFHCA All-West Region team in 2008, first team All-State Tournament in 2007 and 2008, the Kentucky First Team Elite Select in 2008, and the Futures Elite from 2006 to 2008. She was an alternate selection for the Junior National Camp in 2007, played in the AAU Junior Olympics in 2006 and played on the Kentucky All-Star Team in 2008. In her senior season, she recorded five defensive saves and eight goals. The daughter of Spencer and Debra Boyer has two older brothers, Evan and Adam. She intends to study Exercise Science.
“Hannah is a perfect fit for our backfield,” said Robertson. “She has great size, can get low to intercept or tackle and reads the play very well both on the defensive and attacking side of the ball. She will be able to step in and make an impact right away because she is a rare freshman who already possesses a good understanding of outletting and team defensive concepts. She has a great attitude and is passionate about playing for the cream and crimson.”
Shareyna Chang is a forward and played four years on the varsity team at Kecoughtan for Scotty and Jen Tyson. She scored 62 goals and had 45 assists for a school record 169 career points at Kecoughtan, leading the team to District Tournament championships in 2005, 2007 and 2008. She was the Peninsula District Player of the Year in 2006, 2007 and 2008, the All-Eastern Region Player of the Year in 2008 and the Daily Press Player of the Year in 2008. Chang was named first team all-state in 2008, NFHCA first team All-South Region in 2007 and NFHCA first team all-american in 2008. She also attended Junior National Camp in 2008. She has three sisters, Sharlene, Shanille and Shajnea. The daughter of Leighton and Shirley Chang intends to study Environmental Science.
“Rey is a passionate player who is exciting to watch with her flare, dynamic speed and strength,” Robertson said. “She has the potential to be a lethal presence in open space and in the attacking circle. Her first touch on the ball and her determination to win the ball and finish on plays make her very difficult to play against. She is also a consummate team player who is willing to sacrifice to make her team better.”
