LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Freshman Jakie Köhli and sophomore Amy Moore scored three goals each to lead the No. 19 Indiana Hoosiers (10-6, 4-0 CWPA West) to an 8-6 comeback win against No. 18 Cal State Bakersfield in their first game at the Loyola Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Hoosiers trailed 4-0 after one quarter of action, but controlled the remainder of the game, outscoring CSUB by a margin of 8-2 over the next three periods.
“We were a little sluggish at the start,” said Indiana head coach Barry King. “We came alive in the second quarter, and played solid water polo the rest of the way.”
The Roadrunners used two successful six on five opportunities, coupled with scores from long range and a lob to get in front of Indiana after the first quarter.
Indiana got into the act when freshman goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff launched a long pass to sophomore Kelsey Campbell, who converted for her first of two goals in the game. Wyckoff’s long outlet passes would prove to be effective throughout the game. Köhli followed that by stretching out for a tip on the left side after a pass from freshman Kristin Harmidy to bring Hoosiers within two.
Moore, Indiana’s leading scorer, then evened things up late in the second quarter with back to back goals. The first score came on a five meter shot after Campbell earned one of her three kick-outs of the contest. Moore scored her next goal from long range to even the score at 4-4 heading into halftime.
Wyckoff made play after play in goal throughout the second half, none more important than a one on one stop at the beginning of the third period to set the tone for the Hoosier defense. She followed that up by blocking a five meter shot by CSUB. Wyckoff finished the game with 12 saves for Indiana.
The lone third quarter score for Indiana came when Köhli once again got ahead of the Roadrunner defense and scored in a one on one situation to give Indiana their first lead, 5-4. She then started the fourth quarter with a similar play, getting ahead of the pack and scoring after another precise pass from Wyckoff.
CSUB scored on another power play midway through the fourth quarter to pull within a goal, 6-5, but the Hoosiers would not lose their poise.
Senior Maggie Hannon found Moore with a kick out pass that was turned into a goal from deep to put the Hoosiers in front 7-5. CSUB would score their final goal with just over two minutes remaining, and Indiana would counter with a Campbell scoring on a put-back after a Hannon misfire.
Campbell also finished the game with a team-high four steals.
Indiana takes the pool against at 2:20 p.m. PT against No. 10 Loyola Marymount.
