SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore Kelsey Campbell and freshmen Hanna Eimstad and Jakie Köhli scored two goals each for the No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers (12-8, 4-0 CWPA West) as they defeated Brown, 9-8, in the first game of the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif.
The Hoosiers led by three goals with 2:52 to play, however Brown mounted a final rally to pull within a single goal with 30 seconds remaining. Sophomore Nicole Redder, who finished the game with a team-high four steals, intercepted a pass with the clock running down to ice the game for Indiana.
“It was a win,” said Indiana head coach Barry King, “but we have to do a better job of concentrating on what we do.”
After Brown took the lead in the opening minute, the Hoosiers struck back with a six on five goal by Campbell after an assist by junior Kelly Palmberg.
Junior Katie Carson, who finished the game with eight saves, made a terrific five meter penalty save during the first quarter to keep the game tied 1-1. Eimstad then scored both of her goals in the final 1:45 of the period to lift the Hoosiers to a 3-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Hoosiers were close to running away with the game early in the second quarter after sophomore Lauren Wyckoff passed ahead to Redder, who converted on a one on one goal to give Indiana a 4-1 lead. Brown would not go away without a fight, as they answered with two power play goals to close the gap to one at halftime.
The Bears wasted no time getting things started in the third quarter, scoring on a put-back goal to knot the game at 4-4. Köhli would have an answer, scoring on a counter attack, with an assist by Campbell. Campbell would add her second assist a minute later, finding sophomore Amy Moore, who nailed the back of the net from deep to put Hoosiers in front, 6-4. The Bears then scored on a six on five with five seconds left in the quarter to make it 6-5 heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter began with Brown converting their fourth successful power play to tie the game, 6-6. Senior Maggie Hannon made sure the Hoosiers would bounce back, scoring on a post-up goal. Campbell followed Hannon’s goal with a nifty lob past the Brown goalkeeper to give the Hoosiers an 8-6 lead with 3:45 to play.
Köhli appeared to put the game out of reach with a long range skip shot to give Indiana a three goal lead with under three minutes left. Brown, however, would not go down without a fight, scoring two late goals to make it a one goal deficit when the horn sounded.
Indiana will be back in action on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. PT against No. 4 Hawaii.
