SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman Jakie Köhli and sophomore Lauren Wyckoff each scored one goal for the No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers (12-9, 4-0 CWPA West), but it was not enough as No. 4 Hawaii came away with a 6-2 win in the Aztec Invitational.
Indiana had numerous shots stop just inches from crossing the goal line during the first half, but Hawaii took advantage, taking a 5-0 lead into halftime.
“I thought we fought hard all game,” said Indiana head coach Barry King. “If we take advantage of our six on five chances, and have a few bounces go our way, then it’s a different game.”
Freshman Cassie Wyckoff had an outstanding game at goalkeeper, racking up 12 saves, and allowing just one second half Hawaii goal.
The Hoosiers got on the board in the third quarter when Köhli scored from long range after a pump fake. Indiana played solid defense for the remainder of the quarter, as well as drawing three exclusions in the third. Lauren Wyckoff capitalized on a kick-out earned, when she connected on a five meter penalty shot to pull the Hoosiers within three at 5-2.
Solid defense from both teams dominated the final period, with Hawaii scoring the only fourth quarter goal on a post-up to give Hawaii a 6-2 win.
The Hoosiers will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. PT against No. 9 San Jose State.
