SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Sophomore Kelsey Campbell scored the only Indiana goal in an 8-1 loss to No. 6 California on Sunday in the Hoosiers’ fourth game at the Aztec Invitational.
No. 18 Indiana (12-11, 4-0 CWPA West) played the Bears tight through three quarters, trailing by only three heading into the final period. California would score four in the fourth quarter to put things well out of reach for the Hoosiers.
“We played well during the first few quarters,” said Indiana head coach Barry King. “We needed to take better advantage of the exclusions that we earned throughout the game.”
Indiana did not score a goal during any of their eleven power play opportunities, while California scored on three out of four chances in the first half to help them get out in front early.
The Hoosiers trailed 4-0 at halftime, before senior Maggie Hannon kicked the ball out to Campbell, who found the net for the lone Indiana goal. Trailing 4-1 going into the fourth period, things were looking positive for the Hoosiers.
California then went on a four goal tear, including a six on five score, which ended any hopes for a Hoosier comeback.
Junior Katie Carson made the start at goalkeeper, and finished the game with nine saves on 27 California shots.
Indiana received solid defensive play from freshman Jakie Köhli, who finished with a team-high three steals. Junior Kelly Palmberg also grabbed two takeaways for the Hoosiers.
Indiana will finish the Aztec Invitational with a 1:45 p.m. PT meeting with No. 5 San Diego State.
