RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The #6 Indiana University men's golf team scorched the competition during medal round play at the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship on Sunday, finishing three strokes ahead of the second-place team. The Hoosiers will now advance to the top-eight match play championships bracket beginning on Monday as the No. 1 seed.
IU completed the day at 9-over (585). Indiana's first-round opponent in match play will be #5 Stanford. Tee time is scheduled for 8 a.m. pacific time.
True freshman David Erdy placed his name onto the national stage with his performance on Sunday. He topped the individual scoreboard by three strokes after shooting rounds of 72 and 65 to finish 7-under for the day.
Jorge Campillo joins Erdy in the top-15 individually, carding 147 strokes in his 36 holes. His 3-over performance was the 14th best score in the competition.
Alex Martin's day ran a parallel to that of the entire Hoosier squad. Both rebounded from early struggles in the opening round to quickly climb the leaderboards during round number two. Martin put a first-round 82 behind him and shot a 3-under 69 in his second 18 holes, climbing nearly 35 spots on the individual scoreboard up into a tie for 30th place.
Meanwhile, the Hoosiers shared 10th place in the team standings following round one. Indiana was four strokes back from the very important top-eight and 15 strokes shy of the top spot. The Cream and Crimson not only put themselves into the top-eight, but also accented all the way to the top. Indiana and UCLA were leaps and bounds ahead of the field in the second round, recording scores of 282 and 284. The next closest team shot a 293.
Seth Brandon contributed two scores to the team total. Brandon posted rounds of 79 and 76, finishing in a tie for 54th place in the individual standings.
The field is comprised of the top 10-ranked teams nationally at the conclusion of all conference championships in 2008, two sponsor invites and is completed with the next top four teams from the NCAAs not already among the field. The complete field includes: Alabama, Arizona State, Charlotte, Chattanooga, Duke, Florida State, Indiana, Louisville, Middle Tennessee State, San Diego, San Diego State, Stanford, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, UCLA and UC-Irvine.
Officials altered the format for the Collegiate Match Play Championship due to the proposed changes to the Division I championships. Originally conceived as a true match play event, the Collegiate Match Play Championship will now contain both a medal and match play component. The 16 participating teams will play 36 holes of stroke play during the first day of competition. The top eight finishers will then advance to a championship match play bracket while finishers nine through 16 will be placed in a consolation bracket. Each team will play three rounds of match play over the next two days. The match play portion will reflect the proposed format of the NCAA Championships.
