BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Volleyball has teamed up with Girls Inc. of Monroe County to help "inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold." In addition to a clinic hosted at University Gym, Hoosier Volleyball players have also taken time to go visit local young girls at the after-school programs.
"Indiana Volleyball is so excited to begin our partnership with Girls Inc.," said Head Coach Sherry Dunbar. "I love their mission of inspiring girls to be strong, smart and bold. What a better group of girls for our players to work with and build relationships. We have players that are living the dream of many girls and I want them to be able to share with young girls how they were able to make that dream come true."
Girls Inc. provides empowerment-based programs for girls ages 5-18 in Monroe County. Their programs focus on allowing girls to take risks, try new things, build confidence and have fun in a supportive, all-girl environment.
The programs have three main components: an after-school program, summer and school break camps, and sport programs. The sports programs include volleyball, basketball and dance. Volleyball is by far the biggest program with more than 150 girls participating each year.
"Girls Inc. is excited to partner with IU Women's Volleyball," said Rachel Dotson of Girls Inc. "Sports are an important part of our programs because of the benefits that participation in sports has for girls, including increased health and physical fitness, increased confidence and decreased likelihood of participating in high risk behaviors.
"Working with IU Volleyball is a great chance for girls to get to know women not only as athletes, but also as college students who are working hard to pursue their goals. We have had great experiences so far both with the volleyball clinic that the team ran and also with players from the IU team volunteering in our program. We really appreciate the team's openness to getting involved with our organization."
