BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana field hockey head coach Amy Robertson announced her team’s 2009 schedule. The Hoosiers will host six home games this fall at IU Field Hockey Field.
Highlights on the schedule include road matchups with perennial powers Louisville, Wake Forest and Iowa and home games against Michigan State, Penn State and Pacific. Robertson thinks the schedule provides a tough test at the beginning of the season, which will prepare her team for a tough Big Ten slate of games.
“Our schedule is as challenging as ever this year, which will prepare our players for the competition they will face when we get into conference play and the postseason,” said Robertson. “Playing games at Louisville, Iowa and Wake Forest is just about as good of a test as we can get, and our players will be better because of it.”
To open the season, the Hoosiers will play six straight games away from Bloomington, including three games against opponents that Indiana has never played, American on Aug. 28, Richmond on Aug. 30 and Davidson on Sept. 12. The home opener on Sept. 19 will pit IU against the Ball State Cardinals.
“Those are great games because you don’t have any preconceived ideas from past games and you focus more on your own performance,” Robertson said about playing teams for the first time.
Then it is back to the road for four more games before a long five game homestand. A visit to Ann Arbor for a showdown with the rival Michigan Wolverines will close out the regular season on Oct. 31, and then the Hoosiers will play for the Big Ten Championship in East Lansing on Nov. 5-9. The team is playing teams from eight different conferences (Big Ten, MAC, Big East, Southern, Patriot League, Atlantic 10, Pac-10 and Big West).
The Hoosiers open their Spring schedule on Sunday, March 29, hosting Louisville and Ball State in Midwest Spring League play. For complete coverage of Indiana field hockey, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
