BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - No. 18 Indiana (13-13, 4-1 CWPA West) mounted a strong late game rally, but it was not enough as senior Maggie Hannon's turn around shot missed just right with under five seconds remaining to leave Michigan with a dramatic 7-6 win. The victory gives Michigan their second consecutive top seed at the Western Division Championships, which are held in Bloomington on April 18-19.
“We played with a lot passion,” Indiana head coach Barry King said, “but it’s tough to come from behind against talented teams. We have to find ways to get out in front.”
Sophomore Lauren Wyckoff led the Hoosiers with two goals, to go along with a steal and three kick-outs drawn. Hannon had a solid performance on Senior Night, finishing with one goal, three steals, and two earned kick-outs. Freshman Jakie Köhli continued her fine defensive play with a team-high four steals, as well as a goal and an assist.
The Wolverines struck first with a goal midway through the first period, but sophomore Kelsey Campbell responded for the Hoosiers with a long range goal as the shot clock was about to expire to even things at 1-1.
Michigan controlled the first part of the second quarter, reeling off three straight goals to get out in front 4-1. Lauren Wyckoff kept Indiana within striking distance, scoring on a backhand goal from the post after a dish by junior Kelly Palmberg. Wyckoff then spun around a defender and found the net with three seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to one.
Freshman Cassie Wyckoff stepped it up in the third quarter when she made a fantastic save on a Michigan 6-on-4 opportunity. She ended the game with eight saves on 25 Wolverine shots.
Michigan came back with a goal that inched past the line to take a 5-3 lead. Sophomore Kara Butler capitalized on one of her two earned exclusions by scoring a five meter penalty shot to keep Indiana within one. The Wolverines came right back 50 seconds later with a long lob shot that sailed past Wyckoff for a score to give Michigan a 6-4 lead heading into the final stanza.
Hannon connected on a powerful post-up shot with the help of a Köhli assist to briefly pull the Hoosiers within one. Michigan followed it up with a backhand goal to go back up by two scores. Indiana would make a final push led by a Köhli power play goal, but the Hoosiers could not convert on their potentially game-tying final possession when Hannon’s shot just missed.
Indiana will finish the Fluid Four with a contest against Maryland at 12:00 p.m. ET. The Hoosiers game will follow a 10:30 a.m. ET meeting between Michigan and Sonoma State.
