BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - There were plenty of goals to go around for No. 18 Indiana (13-12, 4-0 CWPA West) in their opening game as host of the Fluid Four against Sonoma State. After trailing 2-1 less than two minutes into the action, the Hoosiers went on a 12-2 scoring binge for the remainder of the contest to come away with an impressive 13-4 victory over a Sonoma State team that was fresh off a 12-4 win against No. 20 Santa Clara on March 26.
"I thought we played well on both sides of the ball," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We're looking to build on this performance for the rest of the weekend."
Indiana was led in scoring by sophomore Nicole Redder with three goals. Senior Maggie Hannon and sophomores Kelsey Campbell and Lauren Wyckoff each finished with two scores for the Hoosiers.
Freshman Jakie Köhli found Wyckoff posting up, who converted to get Indiana on the board 30 seconds into the first period. Köhli, following her Western Division Rookie of the Week honor last week, would pick up where she left off at the Aztec Invitational. She finished the game with career-highs of four assists and four steals, to go along with a goal.
Sonoma State responded quickly with two goals to briefly take their only lead of the game, as Campbell would come right back for an Indiana goal to knot things up, 2-2. Along with her scoring, Campbell recorded two assists and three steals.
Redder finished the first quarter strong with two goals in the last three minutes. The first score coming after a long outlet pass from freshman goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff, and the next goal came on a whirling shot from short left. Redder's second score would kick-start Indiana on a seven goal streak through the second quarter and much of the third.
Junior Kelly Palmberg got on the board early in the second quarter after her shot ricocheted in off a Sonoma State defender. Lauren Wyckoff then took advantage of a five meter foul by the Seawolves and converted on the penalty shot to give the Hoosiers a 6-3 lead. Campbell would cap the quarter off with a score after a nifty lob pass from Köhli.
Indiana would continue to build on their 7-3 halftime lead, with Hannon taking control early in the third quarter by scoring back to back post-up goals. Junior Katie Carson, who controlled the goalkeeping duties in the second half with eight saves, made a long pass to Köhli, who fired a shot past the Sonoma State goalie to give Indiana a 10-3 lead. The Seawolves countered with their only second half goal, scoring on a post-up late in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter featured more of the same as Indiana would score three goals to wrap up the contest. Sophomores Amy Moore, Kate Dunn, and Redder scored the final goals for the Hoosiers.
Indiana will be back in action tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET against rival Michigan. The game will be streamed live online, and can accessed by the link above. Michigan defeated Maryland, 10-2, in the first game of the Fluid Four.
