BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana opened play in the Midwest Spring League on Sunday, playing games against Louisville and Ball State. The Hoosiers jumped out to an early lead in both games, but lacking key defensive players proved to be a problem as the Hoosiers gave up second half rallies in both games for the loss. Both games saw IU end up on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision. The Hoosiers played without starting backs Mutsa Mutembwa, Brenna Moeljadi and Brittney Hacken.
Against Louisville, Indiana grabbed an early lead, getting a goal from freshman Morgan Fleetwood in the 17th minute. Louisville rallied in the second half with two goals in the final eight minutes for the win.
Ball State won in much the same fashion. Rising senior Alina Valenti scored in the 30th minute, capping a fast break with a rebound goal. The Hoosiers took that lead into the half. The Cardinals rallied back with goals in the 41st and 60th minutes.
Indiana returns to action on April 4, when they play games against Louisville and Ohio at Louisville. For complete coverage of Indiana field hockey, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
