BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Field Hockey head coach Amy Robertson has announced the spring schedule for her team as well as the dates for the 2009 Indiana Field Hockey Camp. The team will compete in the Longstreth Midwest Spring League for the first time ever, which will see the Hoosiers compete in seven games. Indiana will also host the first ever IU Alumni Game on Saturday, March 28. The Hoosiers open spring play the very next day. The annual Indiana Field Hockey camp will take place on July 23-26.
Robertson is excited about the team’s spring schedule, as it will bring new traditions to the program and provide great preparation for the 2009 season.
“This spring is one of firsts,” said Robertson. “We are having our very first Alumni game, and it will be our first year taking part in Midwest Spring League competition, which consists of many teams from the Big Ten and the Mid-American Conference. All of our competitions will be full-field, 11 to a side games, so this will be the best preparation that we have ever had in order to prepare us for success in the fall.“
IU opens spring league play with a three-team round robin at the IU Field Hockey Field. The team hosts Ball State and perennial power Louisville on March 29. The teams will play 70 minute games (35 minute halves), with the first starting at 10:00 a.m. ET.
Next up for the Hoosiers is a visit to Louisville on April 4, where the Cardinals will host seven teams. Indiana will play Ohio at noon and then square off with Louisville for the second time in two weeks at 4:05 pm. The games will be 50 minutes, with 25 minute halves.
To close out the season, Indiana will travel to Columbus, Ohio, where Ohio State will host six teams. IU will square off with Miami University at 11:15 a.m., Michigan State at 2:30 p.m. and Ball State at 4:30 p.m. The games will be 50 minutes.
The Indiana Field Hockey camp provides the IU staff an opportunity to work with young athletes and contribute to the development of the sport in the Midwest. Robertson said that she looks forward to the camp each summer.
“Our field hockey camp has grown over the past few years and has brought campers from all over to see our campus and athletic facilities. Many of the teams that attend are from this region, a majority coming from St. Louis, Louisville and Ohio. It is a pleasure to be able to contribute to the growth and development of Midwest high school field hockey by providing a camp that offers great coaching, skill and technical content and great game competition. We are really looking forward to having another successful camp in 2009.”
